Help w/Scanmar boats reputation!

You must be looking at the one at Mcmichaels, right? If so, I looked at it extensively before I decided to pass. Not for the fault of the boat.

I found folks in Europe who have Scanmar 33, essentially the same boat but without aft cabin.

I believe the boat is made in Finland.

Search previous posts, as I had a question here too and had some replies.

Contact me off list - ekhar@usa.net - I''ll tell you what I know.

No I looked at it at Mc Michaels in Mamarimick N.Y.....I am going with a Catalina 30 ...which has just as much room and better resale.

Very often critical info like an iron or steel keel or something similar is unknown by the broker. A broker might even have the wrong information. Also, you cannot always rely on what is in the listing. I have personally found drafts to be inaccurate. When it comes to a boat like that it is solely up to you to get all the info you deem necessary.

And, I don''t know about the boat in Norfolk, but it is also common for boats to go through more than one broker.

Hope this helps.

mpin422,
Did you look at the boat in norfolk? I was told that the boat just came to market. Maybe the switched brokers.

The info that I have doesnt mention a steel keel or rudder so I will look into this. There is not much info on this boat so I am worried about resale. I can live with the traveler where it is. The boat has just come to market so I wouldnt make an offer this soon anyway. I have been researching boats for about a year now and have learned just enough to confuse myself so thanks for the help. Im new to this and am trying (like so many others) to do the best I can.

Maybe the boat is perfect for you... but be patient and keep looking and be sure. Part of the ''reputation'' factor I mentioned in my other posts has to do with this.

Since this is your fist boat, it will likely not be your last. Thus you have to take into account how it will sell. This part of the subjective reputation factor you have to account for. Selling an older, lesser known boat can take YEARS (I am willing to bet that boat has been on the market for 2 yrs or more, ask them). When it is your turn to sell, that time will be frustrating, keep you from your other boat and cost real money.

Selling a boat is equal parts: reputation, condition, price and luck. Thus an unknown boat with less than desireable qualities (mentioned by the poster above) going for top dollar.... hmmmmmmm ... not good math should it be yours.

Hope this helps.

Jerry,

I looked at the very boat you are looking at. There is not much know about the boat because it is from sweden. The one reveiw said it was well made could sail into a rock at 6 knots with little or no hull damage. I changed my mind about the boat because it has a steel keel and rudder and will be a constant rust problem. Panch the sales man said I would have to pay to commission the boat for a test sail a $500.00 cost added to the $700.00 survey cost $1200.00 and if I dont like the way it sails I just lost $1200.00. The **** pit is tight and the traveler right behind the helm could be anoying. The boat looks like it has been well cared for. But the owners are stead fast with the price. If you get them to $45,000.0 you wil still be at $49,000.00 with tax, commisioning ,bottom, paint, Etc. And if you dont like it you could be waiting a long time for a buyer. Good luck if you go for it.
