Hey you all, I am at the airport in Langkawi, Malaysia heading to my abode in BKK. I need to tell you about my latest experience. I met aeventyr60 in Phuket again about week ago. he was kind enough invite me to cruiise with him the Langkawi to look at a boat I was/am seriously considering purchasing as my 1st boat. Because he is a professional the first thing he did was the safety briefing. Now I have been in aviation all my life and the briefing are very similar and all very important. I had no doubt my duties and the things I could expect the coming days.
We cleared customs, (1st for me by boat) and we took off. 1st let me tell you this about that. Phukert and other tourist places are definitely not the place to go if you want to get away from it all. By all means go there if you want all the comforts of home but is that cruising? We headed east first to visit Cpt Len and his better half. I was surprised how hard it was just moving about on a moving deck while underway. I did not realy feel comfortable until the 4th day. We arrived just at dark and decided that will the rocks around and a new place the prudent thing would be to stay with the boat and dingy ashore in the morning. man, the the onshore wind it was rather rough at anchor. However because of the days activities I had no trouble sleeping that night.
Cpt Len was a very good host. Their bungalow was beautiful and the beach was pristine. It was a pleasure in meeting the gentleman and I hope to see him again in the near future.
The next few days we headed south and a leisurely place to Malaysia. aeventyr60 was very patient to say the least. As a helicopter and airplane instructor and I can very much know what he was going through as he let me steer, work the winches and generally run the boat. As an experienced flight instructor I can feel what the aircraft is going to do before it actually does it. With a sailboat I was the student and I was using all my brain cells on the basics so I knew what he was going through letting me stumble my way through it.
The last day we had 20-25 knot winds just aft of the beam. That boat was flying. Before we got underway though we took in one reef in the main in anticipation of the winds. It was great. We saw consistent 7-7.4kts through the water and sometimes 8-8.2 during gusts. The boat was rock solid.
Anyway I need to catch my flight, will write more later.
Thanks my friend and see you soon.
