Re: How to sell a 32 foot Downeast sailboat

SJB is a CL maestro... Our son has also bought and sold a couple of boats and lots of gear with success as well.

CL here allows 10 pics which is similar to most YW listings.

Good pics are critically important for getting good responses. As for details, put the important stuff in - engine hours, last haul, last survey, sails, special gear etc. but don't run on for a full screen with every little detail - peoples eyes glaze over.

Put in enough to let them know if it's appropriate for them and let them call for more. If you haven't used CL much, I recommend stating first contact must be by phone - the real timewasters (lots) rarely phone first.

Around here we have a couple of other CL type sites - Kijiji and Used .... (Seattle?) - they seem to be more used than CL in some places - in Victoria for example, CL is almost unused but Used Victoria is very big.

Lastly, before you take pics, CLEAN IT UP. It is incredible how many pics are taken with crap everywhere, dirty dishes in the sink, even a turd in the toilet (really!).

On a boat that size, I'd spend at least a full day cleaning up the interior, taking off the keeper gear, taking inventory of the sale gear etc. Around here, keeping the green slime off the outside really matters as well.

Don't forget the classified section of 48North...

I have been successful in selling two boats on Craigslist. One hint I have for you is to create a website for your boat.. Patterned after what Yachtworld does. Lots of pictures and detailed information. Make it easy for people to find out about your boat. The 4 or so pictures and limited formatting options on Craigslist isn't good enough.

Example: Catalina 30 For Sale

P.S.
Good luck on your sale.. I'd like to take a moment to brag that my father circumnavigated on a Downeast38 in the 1980s and 1990s

Unfortunately you won't find a quality broker in Bellingham that will take a 20K listing. Clean it up put a sign on it and list it in Seattle Craigslist. Summers coming
PS I have spent many an evening walking the docks glass of wine in hand. Every time I walked by your boat it brought back memories of being a wide open 18 year old exploring the west on a Downeast 32... great boat at that price or any.

you can also put an E-bay ad with a buy it now at your asking price. I and I'm sure others look at the boats on E-bay. I one my 2nd boat on E-bay and know if I don't stay off their site might endding up owning another boat.

Some one may be asking 50 but will never see it. Even if it is perfect. They are nice boats but not 50 I would think a really nice one might bring 30 rp 35 but 50 is dreaming.

Re: How to sell a 32 foot Downeast sailboat

Nice boat, I looked at one that was in awful shape and they wanted more than that. I think it was for sale for 4 or 5 years, and he never lowered his price. I often wonder what it wound up selling for if it ever did. I know the broker would not renew the listing. You sound to have reasonable expectations. List it here, Craigs List, and sailboat listings. If it does not sell for over $20,000 you might want to put it on eBay.

Re: How to sell a 32 foot Downeast sailboat

You might try the Sailing Texas website. Their "Sailboats for Sale" feature seems to be effective based on their Sailboat Photo Gallery which gives the history of all their listings. A couple of Downeast 32s have been listed there. One sold in '08 for what you paid for yours and another was originally listed last year at 32.5K but lowered to 22.9K about a month later. That ad expired and there is no indication of whether it sold or not (the site doesn't know unless the seller lets them know).
