I had exact same symptons. My cutlass was totally worn out, shaft was not true, and my prop was out of pitch. I took the whole lot to a prop shop and had prop re-pitched new cutlass pressed in and bought new shaft. Total cost $230.00.-thomas

When my cutlass bearing wore out it was accompanied by significant vibrations (felt throughout the hull) at higher rpm ranges. In total there was probably 3/32" play between the shaft and bearing.
Fix it quickly! In my case the transmission burnt out while I was trying to hang on until the end of the season.

Another source can be misalignment of the propshaft as boats change shape over time and vibration dampers sag. It may also be a transmission bearing.

Another possible problem causing this is a worn shaft. I have had to replace shafts on older yachts. After a number of years SS shafts do wear and over the years can wear enough to need replacement. Measure the shaft when you change the bearing.

I replaced my cutlass bearing this year. Had similar symptoms. As you boat is in the water I guess I would suggest that you send a diver down and have him tug on the shaft. If there is play between the shaft and the cutlass bearing it probably needs to be replaced.

What are the symptoms of a failing cutlass bearing? I am gatting a metallic vibration at certain rpm''s , and also when I motor hard to port on my Catalina 30. No vibrations when the transmission is in neutral. Any input?
