In that particular case we were surfing down a wave and I was praying that the bow wasn't going to dig in, it didn't and we made it.

We saw 17 knots DDW with the chute up. It was blowing around 35 knots at the time (It was only blowing 20-25 when we hoisted) White knuckle sailing until we were able to get it down, I'm still amazed it didn't blow apart. Normally we hit 6.5 upwind in 10-15 probablly average 5.5. Off the wind we can top 7.5. DDW in 10-15 we hit 8-9.
hThe boats a Columbia Sabre. 32'L 6'4" W with a 21'.6" W/L.

We've moved Eclipse at better than 12.5 knots dead downwind with only a reefed main hoisted. Of course it was blowing more than 40 in the puffs, and they'd closed Laguardia Airport because of the wind. The bow wave was shooting spray so wide it was making rainbows out by the end of the boom. http://www.stw.fr/album_photo/grande/ph_alb_11742_2_gr.jpg

On the way back from Block Island yesterday, the GPS clocked 6.7 kts SOG, not speed over water. Wind was at 18 kts, but we were heading into 5-7 ft seas . . . slowed us down considerably, but still not bad for a 9 ton ketch motorsailer without motor power .
With the 90hp motor - I've clocked 10 kts.
