keel re-engineering

I am in considering purchasing an O''Day 39 at a significantly reduced price (due to circumstances on sellers end). The problem it drafts 7'' and for those familar with the west end of Lake Erie that is too much draft. I have been told that reducing the draft to a 4''6" bulb keel is common and a viable option. I would love to hear from someone that has undergone this surgery or anyone that has any information on the effects of this on performance, resale, integrity... The yard I have spoken to has ball parked the price at less than $5,000, which still makes this boat an ideal purchase - at least price wise. Thank you
