If you followed the link that I posted to the Rebuilding an Oberdorfer Pump thread, you would read that the grease cap is ONLY used on the NM202, NM202-03 and NM202-07. It is NOT used on the NM202-15 or NM202-16. - both of which cost less than $250.

I recommend upgrading to the 3" HX if you are having issues with overheating or operating in tropical waters

CalebD -- I installed a new Oberdorfer N202M-15 on my Universal 5216 during it's rebuilding in 2012 and it does not have the grease cup you mention, I wonder if they eliminated it on the newer pumps. My old Atomic-4 engine did have a grease cup on the pump, but I don't recall the pump make or model. And yes, I did remember to turn the cup every time I was in the engine compartment, which is to say, irregularly....

Simon -- The rebuilding I mentioned above was needed because the previous owner didn't notice or neglected to fix a leaking raw water pump which turned into salt water in the crankcase, leading to seizure of the governor and fuel injection pump plus damage to the valves, bearings, pistons and cylinders. $200 for a new pump is cheap insurance!

Mark -- Thanks for the info on the undersized heat exchanger, I will have to check mine. That may explain why my engine stays at the correct temp when running at about 2200-2400, but climbs to more than 200 Deg if I run it closer to the max RPM. A friend with a 5424 noticed the same thing when he installed the Oberdorfer N202M. Not sure if his was the -15 or -16.

If you really want to drill down on the differences between the Oberdorfer and the Sherwood - especially the 2 bolt versions, read this thread; M35B Sherwood -> Oberdorfer direct replacement

Thanks for your rapid response Marksf and eherlihy - yet again. Very much appreciated. It seems I have an Oberdorfer type with 2 bolt flange attachment. Now I have to decide which size barb fittings I have. Having now been directed to the rebuild thread I can see very clear the advantage in getting a replacement! Hopefully Depco who Inhave now emailed will oblige in due course.

If it is a Sherwood, and you want to rebuild it, here are the part numbers I used (this assumes the shaft isn't badly scored) :

The problem is, if you have the original undersized 2" heat exchanger, the cooling is very marginal with the Oberdorfer pump. The Sherwood shifts about 50% more water, so the cooling will still be marginal, but less so. If you are going to switch to an Oberdorfer pump, I would recommend only doing so if you upgrade the heat exchanger to 3" at the same time.

Universal started using a 3" later on, and many have been retrofitted, so it is possible you already have one.

The pump that you want is an Oberdorfer NM202-1x pump from Depco Pump in Sarasota Fl. The "x" will be either a 5 (3/8") or 6 (1/2") depending on the inside diameter of the hose barb fitting. My advice, based on experience, is that you BUY A NEW PUMP rather than waste time and money on rebuilding it. If you search Sailnet there is a DETAILED thread on the rebuilding of an Oberdorfer Pump.

The other brand of pump that was used on these engines is a Sherwood. The bodies of these pumps are made of steel, and they are good for about 2 seasons before they need replacement.
