Sorry. I have to disagree. Make those points any time you tuck a reef! Even a short 50 knot blow will flog that bunt and shake the hell out of the rigging! Also, those little summer squalls can dump a hell of a lot of water and fill that pocket amazingly efficiently, resulting in a lot of excessive strain on the rig and can even greatly diminish the stability of the boat!fficeffice" />

The articles that I referenced are on Sailnet, and I found them very informative. Although, as I said, I love the varied and highly experienced input that I get from our shipmates on the forum. Search on the articles section to view them.

keep your reefing line/s separate from the reef sail ties. Usually the 'ties' are sewn into the sail. Their purpose is to keep the loose sail at the bottom after you reef from flogging. They will rip your sail out if you use them for anything else.
The reefing lines run through the large gromets at both the tack and the clew points of the reefed sail. In both cases you usually tie one end of the line through a padeye using a stopper knot, thread it up through the reef point, then down to the other side where it is cleated off. A lot of times for smaller 'jiffy reefed' boats there is a block near the end of the boom that leads it to a cleat midway on the boom. At the mast it is common to have both the padeye and the cleat on the mast so that there are forces forward to keep the tack close to the mast.

|Bardo||My main is loose footed, So I won't have to secure the sail to the boom. I read the articles which describe the process as well, but after I posted (as usual). Its so much more interesting to hear all the different approaches from the salty dawgs. Thanks!|

Also, make sure you untie any of the reefing point tie lines before trying to shake out a reef...or you're probably going to tear the sail.
IMHO, you don't generally need to tie in the reefing points unless you're going to be reefed for an extended period of time. If you're just reefing for a brief summer thunderstorm, I wouldn't bother tieing off all the reef points.
I would recommend using a single line for each point, rather than the one long continuous line, since it will generally be easier and faster to tie them off with individual lines. A short piece, 4-6' of 1/4" line (or a bit longer depending on the size of the sail, boom and whether you have a boltrope foot on the mainsail) passed through the reefing point, with a stopper knot tied on either side of the mid-point to hold it in place would do the trick nicely.

|pirateofcapeann||Just some things to keep in mind: The reef points are only meant to secure bunt of the sail from flogging about when the reef is tucked in. Donít try to shape the sail with the points! The points wonít handle the strain and the sail will become stretched out and possibly tear. Also, if possible, donít make the points around the boom. Make them around the foot of the sail only. If your sail uses a boltrope that slides into the boom track, you wonít be able to avoid this.|
