Re: Shroud clips, oversized or undersized?

Seems to do the job ok, thanks to all who gave info about wires and such though, it was informative.

1/2" swage tool for $24 can't be good quality...

Found a 1/8" to 1/2" swage tool at lowes for 24 dollars, and it is the bolt cutter style. Cant beat that!

7 x 7 is a lot more flexible than 1 x 19. Should be fine. But get the proper tool to swage it. The wire will never break - a bad swage will.

What about 7x7 wire?

I have found some for half what I can find the 7x19 for.

oh cool then by all means 7x19 its quite a bit more pliable, almost all the dinghies I have had have had this wire

Re: Shroud clips, oversized or undersized?

The order had not shipped yet, I will just grab 1/8" 7x19 instead. 5/16 seems to be a real oddball size that hardware does not support.

Re: Shroud clips, oversized or undersized?

Ideally you should not be using 1x19 wire bent around thimbles. The 1x19 doesn't like to bend and you'll see the strands start to separate a bit as they are forced around the thimbles.

However, I had 1x19 wire bent around thimbles and swedged with the (doubled) nicopress fittings you posted on my 10,000lb 31ft boat and it did hold up the stick. Personally I wouldn't do it again that way on a keelboat, but the risks are less in a dinghy. You'll probably be just fine, but next time you rig something like this it would be better to use 7x19 wire as it tolerates bending around the thimbles better. Also double nicropress sleeves are never necessary. If the sleeve is slipping, it's the wrong size, or was not pressed on correctly.
