Parallels between the auto and boat industies are obvious. Both are providing long-term (cars? long-term?) non-consumable products to the public, and are set up with manufacturers working through dealerships. They will encounter similar issues, like warrantee coverage and repair work, because of this. The differing natures of their customers and products will also create differences. What a Rolls-Royce customer wants and expects is different from the guy looking for a Chevy. The sailor is different in some ways from the powerboater. To work, the system needs to meet the needs and expectations (are they always the same thing?) of their respective customers. It''s Psych 101 all over again, every day, for everybody.

Some posters believe making auto-boat industry comparisons are not appropriate. In a recent issue of Boating Industry International notes "While the boating industry is clearly very different from the auto industry in terms of volume, product quality, distribution and service, the differences don''t matter to consumers comparing the two experiences." The conclusion seemed to point to a real problem between manufacturers and dealers and that they need to meet or exceed customer expectations if they are to retain customers and attract new ones.
The spin seemed directed mostly at powerboats. Any opinions on the sailboat situation?
