sailingdog Not just you... pretty much the rest of the country too.... I actually feel a bit sorry for her, since it is obvious that she had an answer all prepared for a totally different question...and that her mind froze up under the unexpected pressure of having a totally different question from what she was expecting.

kevsail81 Kwaltersmi,
May i suggest reading a book titled "the essentials of living aboard a boat"
In addition to giving a "ballpark" figure of liveaboards, it has a ton of usefull info on the subject of liveaboards, you can order it online for like 12 bucks. best of luck!

Freesail99 Home wine making classes coming soon. In fact we'll be picking grapes within the next week here ........ A credit card that you don't use may also help with emergencies.

Melrna Emergency fund from what Free said in the Carib is doable but if the bigger boat problems arise that fund won't do. Last minute airfare will cost upwards of over a $1000 a ticket. That doesn't include storing the boat and money needed once back in the US. Also if the engine totally dies, sails ripped to shreds, demasted or serious water incursions that fund probably won't cover it. Most cruisers I believe up that to around $10,000.
Yes, Dog, Fiji isn't in the Carib but one never knows where the wind might blow you. If you rely on my celestial nav, Fiji is definitely a possibility. Plus I hear the women and men wear less.
For some people liquor money can be the biggest daily expense. But home brew will take care of that nicely. Maybe Freesail can gives all some tips on making home brew wine.

Not to mention hurricane layup or medical evacuation.

sailingdog I'd say, figure on about $6-8000 per year for "room & board". This doesn't include things like insurance, repairs, or maintenance-related costs—just keeping the boat there and eating. Also, it assumes that you've made some provision for charging the batteries that doesn't involve running your engine or a generator—either solar, wind or both. It also assumes that you're not staying in a marina most of the time and not bar hopping every night.
