My guess is that the reason they were so generous is that they knew the thing was obsolete and have gone and purchased a Cat I/II 406 MHz EPIRB.

Class A, B, & S EPIRBs are now prohibited as of Jan. 1, 2007.
This leaves only the 406 (cat. I & II) and the class C (on the Great Lakes).
Refer to 47 CFR Parts 80.1051 through 80.1059. This went out in the Notice to Mariners.
So in other words that particular EPIRB is no longer viable. The reason is that they have had to many false alerts with those EPIRBs.
Your 406 can have the 121.5 for RDF and this also does not effect the 121.5 MOB devices.
Now you are stuck with legally deposing of that old EPIRB.

So, I was given an EPIRB but I don't know if it is still useable (i.e., the old style). I couldn't find any indication of the Megahertz on it. Here is what is listed on the side: Guest Model 630A, Class B, 1997. Any thoughts?
