Best marine/ham SSB email seminar

WC:

The Gam is held in the Melbourne Civic Center, right across the street from Conchy Joe''s, on November 15-17. The exhibition hall is filled with vendors on Nov 16 (Saturday) as I recall, while the seminars run all 3 days.

You''ll find more info at the URL I gave you above.

Best marine/ham SSB email seminar

I imagine most folks here saw the article this Spring in SAIL on ''Hooking Up''. In part it read: "By far the most popular HF e-mail service for recreational mariners is the amateur ham network known as Winlink. In many respects it is also the most sophisticated system. Winlink has the most robust software, the most mailbox stations standing by to route traffic into the Internet--31 volunteer stations at last count, scattered literally all over the world--supports multiple attachments to messages, can be accessed via landlines, has a position-reporting feature that allows family and friends to see from where a Winlink user last hooked into the system, and offers a variety of weather products that can be downloaded from the system''s bulletin board. Best of all it is totally free."

The big dilemma in becoming a ham is what you do when the structured classes end, the license arrives, and you don''t know much about installing a radio on a boat...let alone getting set up with Winlink email. The upcoming SSCA Gam in Melbourne, FL is always a large mix of good seminars, flea market, socials, vendors displaying all types of marine gear, and also an all-day, hands-on standalone set of seminars that cover installing an onboard radio & antenna, getting started using the Winlink system, and far more. In fact, you can arrive at 7:30 a.m. and watch a complete radio station being built before the first seminar begins, doing most of what you''d need to do on yor boat. And registration is a bargain.

If you want to know more about this topic and can manage to drive/fly down to Melbourne, FL for a weekend (seminars run Fri-Sun but the SSB seminars are all day Saturday), visit www.ssca.org for more info. You''ll leave with polished handouts that will get you started and a bit of confidence to do so.
