Deck Stepped Mast

The mast step is pretty much there to just hold the base of the mast from moving around and it doesn''t take much to do that on a smaller boat.I assume you mean the bolts that currently there are not through the deck. No, it wouldnt be a bad idea to through bolt with a backing plate but I would be more concerned that the core materal is dry and sound in the area of said mast step before re-install.

Deck Stepped Mast

I am refitting an Irwin 28, and am about to bed the mast boot. There are only four quarter inch bolts, 1 3/4 inches long, holding the boot to the deck. Would it be wise to thru bolt the boot with longer bolts and a backing plate?
