Thanks to all who have posted, particularly those who read the original question closely.
Xort's anecdote answered my curiosity in spades. Should I make an offer on the vessel in question, I will trust my instincts and elect to have an independent survey done and not rely on the month old survey commissioned by the dealer/broker.
Now, can we please allow this thread to go back to sleep?

Time to pile on...
I sold my boat this spring. Broker insisted it have a survey or they wouldn't list it. So I went with their recomended surveyor. I was amazed by the things he missed. Wasn't my problem, the broker loved that they had a 'good' survey. I graciously pointed out the missed deficiencies to the buyer, I wasn't going to hide known defects.
Then came time for the engine survey. The broker recommended guy did not climb down into the engine space, didn't use a laser temp guage, didn't even check the oil! Went for a boat ride and took their money!

I'll step in here, I do my own home inspections (and commercial property), have for many years. The last home was a high 6 figure home. I feel way more comfortable with my own skills than that a total stranger. As for a boat, it depends on the boat and deal being made. Then again I am a risk taker, always have been...........flame on

I think it depends. My last purchase was a T34C I offered to buy quickly 'as is' in exchange for a few thousand off the purchase price. I did my own amateur survey.
If you're willing to take the risk, it can be a useful bargaining tool, up to a point. I'd never risk it for a purchase above say... 20K though.

Has anyone bought a home costing 100k WITHOUT an inspection?
If you're going to use OP's money (bank) then they're going to require one.
If you're going to insure it, one will be needed.

Yeah, you know, when I bought my Catalina 30, for 11k, I was tempted to forgo the survey, as the boat had obviously been maintained, but the owner did not speak much english, and i used the survey as an opportunity to have the guy familiarize me with the issues.
It was a cheap 400 bucks, in retrospect.
With anything over 20k, I would not hesistate. not for an instant.
Also, the mechanic on the engine makes a lot of sense, as well. Think of the big ticket items: a new diesel would kill you.
