Not sure who you talked to, but I am still repairing autopilots and do not have a powerboat.

That's unfortunate. He was a great help to me.
Hard to get anyone to work on older units. They just want to sell you something new.
If you have a soldering iron hit all the connections on the circut board. Otherwise have a running search on ebay.

Hey Jim

E mailed Dan but he no longer has a shop nor does he repair any autopilots any more, he now bought a power boat and has too many projects to help me out. So if you have any other suggestions please let me know. My motor is good both directions, and i get the beep sound when pushing the buttons, just no response from the extension rod.
PS I did get a burning smell when i opened the case

The Pirate is right unfortunately. I work on all sorts of electronics and have experience with that unit. If there is anyway to not open the controller, don''t. The boards are connected together U.K. style and very prone to failure. The dodge switch will fall out, the O-ring will need to be replaced, they are tough to get back together correctly and you will most probably end up with an intermittent new problem. I wasted 6 hours on one of those things with a similar problem. If you must crack it open and need help, drop me a note.

If memory serves, theyíre either T10 or T15 Torx heads. If you have to ask that question, Iíd ask if you have the expertise to go inside of that thing with out doing further damage. Thereís quite a bit of sensitive parts and circuitry involved as specially around the compass head and that red trim around itís midships is actually a seal which can be a bit of a bother to properly put back in place. The plastic in those older ones can get quite brittle and they donít take too kindly to flexing or being forced. Iíd recommend taking it to someone with a background in repairing electrical and mechanical items. It may not be rocket science but itís $400 in the trashcan if you screw it up!

Visit the Raymarine site and search their users'' help forum; the answer may be there. If not, you can post your query and they will answer it. Another (perhaps parallel) query to their general email address might work, too.

I think Raymarine has an excellent Q&A Forum for these kinds of things. Reading some of the problems that are addressed and using the functional search engine, I''m left wondering why this isn''t more often seen.

Harbor Freight has a cheap set of bits to fit hex socket screwdriver handles. It includes several styles and sizes, one of which might fit.
