where to keep the boat?

I''ve been lurking for about a month. I''ve read the posts that interested me all the way back to the begining. You sound like fine folks. I''m not asking about chosing a boat but I am hoping someone can share some insight to my boat related questions.
The plan was to move from a midwestern big city to an island where my wife and I could live the slow pace life, sit on the beach, fish, work a part-time job, live in a small house and sail. Our choice was Hatteras Island. Pamlico sound is not the perfect place to sail. There is lots of shallow water and a lack of destinations. But, on the positive side (for us) Walmart, fast food, four-lane hiways and the rat race are 50+ miles away. We live on a canal and have a Siren 17. Long story short, the yuppies have discovered Hatteras and the time is coming to move on. We are thinking SW Florida and are wondering whether to consider property that isn''t waterfront. Anybody have insight into as to where to keep a sailboat (I''m thinking C&C Corvette, Tartan 30, ect.) if you don''t own a dock? If you look hard can you find a cheap slip? Are there places around Cape Coral, Pine Island area where a boat can be moored?
Thanks in advance
