"Today a client may walk in the door and ask for a "classic" type design. I'll smile and rub my hands together. Then the client will add, in passing "Oh yes, I want a small gen set and A/C and a big double berth aft and 300' of chain and a pop up TV in the salon and a shower stall and 6'9" headroom and a 75hp aux, and room to stow a dinghy on deck and 200 gallons of water and 100 gallons of fuel and 100 gallons of holding". So I will have the choice of complying or going on unemployment. It seems the only reasonable response to that kind of design outline is to say "And what color would you like it Boss?" and then do my best to salvage what pride I can in the final design. Actaully its a lot of fun. Often times the most challenging requirements lead to the most interesting designs. Compromise does not have to be a negative term."

A true designer, a true spirit, a gem for our time.

he's a pisser and a half, you should read some of his other posts...

heres a favorite:

"I had the chance to meet Charley Mrgan at the Nap Show many, many years ago. He walked around on the Valiant 40 and when he left he said "God bless you Bob".

I felt blessed. "

and lastly...

"I once stood on a dock with Ted Hood early in the morning. We were looking at a Little Harbor on the next dock.
I said, "Great looking boat."
Ted said "Yep, it's one of mine."
"I really like the sheer" I said in my very best kiss ass tone.
Ted said "We added 8' to that boat. I never liked the sheer."

LOL... when kissing ass, you should make like a good defense lawyer and not make any statements if you don't know what the response will be before making them.

Bob is great -- all around good guy. If folks aren't following the current thread on designing a new cruiser on SA, you ought to be. Best thread I have ever seen on a sailing site.

We gave our son the book "Perry on Yacht Design" - it's a great read. I managed a third of it before wrapping and now read it as I can when we are at their place.

Lots of good stories about the various designs, promoters, builders across North America and in the Orient.

A great book to have laying about for those slow moments.

My wife gave me that book for Christmas. It's loaded with some great info and insight. His way of explaining design elements/issues is about the best there is. I keep it and Dan Spurr's Heart of Glass close by at all times.

And you're getting an RV why??? :)

Charlie -- When you take him out, be sure to heat up some Dinty Moore Beef stew. In one of his reviews a long time ago he waxed poetic about the old days when galleys were only there to heat up Dinty Moore. (I think he's beyond that now.)
