Kelly, you really should include a copy of Latitude 38 in your gift pack. It is free at any West Marine store if you happen to hit them at the right time...but you can ask the staff to hold one back for you, given your ''special'' need.

It is free and oriented to sailing on San Francisco Bay but, over the years, has developed a following among sailors all over the world. The ''Letters'' and ''Cruising'' sections are in fact chocked full of content from world cruisers and it makes the reading realistic and ''first hand'' in ways often missed by the glossy monthly periodicals. Its success has spawned a series of other regional, free mags (Spinsheet in the Chesapeake Bay area, Southwinds in the U.S. Southeast, Latitude 48 in the Pac Northwest), all of which are positive assets for us all - any of them would also make a nice addition.

I enjoy Lats & Atts......the big magazines seem to be repetitive after reading for 12-18 months

"Latitudes and Attitudes" gets my vote. It''s a little corny at times and they still need a proof reader( but most mags have gotten lax in that respect). And, of course, "Cruising World" which I''ve been getting for about 20 years( think they should give me an anniversary subscription???).

Check out Good Old Boat magazine (www.goodoldboat.com) Comes out 6 times a year. It''s geared towards those of us with boats 10 years and older. In the spirit of full disclosure, I write for them occasionally.

Reading material depends a bit on the kind of sailor your friend is. "Sailing" (based in WI or IL, I forget) is a great mag with good photography that your friend probably hasn''t seen. Articles are more in-depth than many of the glossy Dr''s-office varieties. Woodenboat (if he has one of those) will fascinate him if he doesn''t already subscribe. "Sailing World" is oriented more to racing. Bon voyage!
