Ode to Rum

"The horse and mule live thirty years,
And nothing know of wine and beers.
The goat and sheep at thirty die
And never taste of scotch or rye,
The cow drinks water by the ton,
And at eighteen is nearly done.
The dog at fifteen cashes in
Without the aid of rum or gin,
The cat in milk and water soaks,
And then in twelve short years it croaks,
The modest, sober, bone dry hen
Lays eggs for nogs, then dies at ten.
All animals are strictly dry
They sinless live and swiftly die
But sinful, ginful, rum-soaked men
Survive for three score years and ten."

Poem taken from "The Barbados Book" by Louis Lynch, 1964.

Re: Rum enjoyment

Just coming off fall now, so ...

1 cup sugar
2 cups water
1.5 cups black tea, cooled
1.5 cups fresh lemon juice (6 to 8 lemons), strained
1 (750-ml) bottle Jamaican amber rum (I've been using Appleton)
12 oz Calvados (1.5 cups)
small handful of cinnamon stick pieces

Mix all that up and give it a couple of hours for the flavors to blend. Works equally well chilled or warmed in a pot and served in a mug. (edit: makes about three quarts, so have storage for about a gallon of liquid. And don't try to finish it by yourself; three friends *minimum*. You have been warned.)

Re: Rum enjoyment

I am going to revive this thread again. It has always been one of my favorites.

I just got back from Cartagena Colombia and tried the best of the local stuff. I was very impressed with El Dictator. Both 12 and the 20 were excellent. It has probably been mentioned several times in this thread but I figured I would mention it again.

Re: Rum enjoyment

Helped a bartender here working on a recipe for winter grog this evening. So far it's 2 oz of dark rum, 1 tsp sugar syrup, 1/4 tsp of lemon juice, two dashes of Peychauds bitters, and about an oz and a half of just-off-the-boil water in a mug.
