Stede,

When I mentioned the speed, I was thinking in terms of racing vs layed-back cruising. You''re not going to win any races, but she will do just fine in terms of cruising. I should also mention that leaks were a big problem with Irwins. Did the owners caught them and fixed them properly? Again, the need for a good surveyor.

If you intend to use her for a cruiser/liveaboard, it will be a good choice. CBs do present some issues in terms of maintainance (requirements and ease of), but they allow you to get into spots that others can''t.

Irwin 38 Centerboard

Bob-m,

Thanks for the information on the Irwin 38 centerboard. The boat does indeed seem to be a "mixed bag." There is only one review on the boat under the Sailnet checkboat section under "Irwin 38 Classic." The owner spoke very favorable of the boat.I found one other review on the net from a yacht designer and he spoke favorable of the boat also, except he mentioned some short comings on the boats interior joinery, etc. I was surprised to read your comments about the boat not earning high marks in regard to speed. I had previously tried to look up the PHRF-NE rating of the boat, but the chart didn''t have a rating for the 38CB. It did have one for the 39CB & the 38-2,and both of those were 126. I thought the 38CB would probably be somewhere in the mid 130''s,but it sounds like my guesstimate must be off. To me, a boat in the 130''s isn''t a racer, but would be acceptable for my needs if she met my other criteria.I''m not really concerned with the fit and finish of the interior because I have pretty good skills in all the construction type trades and have made some major interior changes on the boat I presently have.I don''t know much about the Irwins, but this boat caught my interest. It seemed to have some potential in meeting my needs, while being fairly inexpensive. Each time I think I have my list narrowed down on boats to pursue, I seem to get side tracked on to another boat. I''ll probably go completely mad before I choose, so I guess I''ll be happy with whatever I purchase. Thanks again!

Stede,

We owned a Irwin for about 5 years. They are a mixed bag. As far as livability and comfort at sea, they are great. When it comes to speed, quality of construction and how well they point to windward, they do not earn high marks. If your intended use is coastal cruising and jumps to the Bahamas, I would highly recommend them.

On the qualtiy of construction issue, since they are 20 or more years old, if the boat has been maintained properly, most of those issues should have already been resolved.

The previous owner of our boat was as "anal" as they come. The boat was in perfect condition and we had very few problems. The main thing that you need to do is find a real good surveyor. I can not stress this enough with the Irwins!!! I''m sure there are some dogs as well as some jewels out there.

Good Luck!!

You might try the Irwin mail list here at sail net for some answers...there are a number of 38 owners there.
My own opinion is that it is a wonderful, spacious boat and you can find them in all conditions and price ranges...but it is a value for those interested in coastal cruising. No problems with hull integrity I am aware of but this is NOT a bluewater vessel...good for what is was made for!
Best...Gb

I''m trying to find some good information on the Irwin 38 centerboard. I''ve read that Irwin cut corners on some aspects in the finishing out of the boat, but I haven''t read anything negative about the integrity of the hull/decking. Also, does anyone know what the PHRF rating is on the boat? All information would be appreciated. Thanks!
