Some of the Catalina's that were originally rigged with rope/wire halyards were not spliced but rather the wire was nico-pressed around a thimble and the rope was either tied or eye spliced to that. Usually in those cases the sheaves were too small to accept rope at all.
If that is your situation, you will have to replace the sheaves as well as the divider between them.
I agree with SD that Sta-Set X is a good economical alternative to high-tech line. A little more complicated to splice and a little stiff but good line.

One of the best, economical lines for halyards is StaSetX. It is an all polyester construction line, but the core is parallel construction, rather than a double-braid, so it have very little stretch for an all Polyester construction rope. Unless you need the lightness and extremely low stretch of a Dyneema/Spectra/Vectran based high-tech line, save the money and get StaSet X.
Definitely check you're masthead sheaves and the exit slots to make sure the sheaves can handle rope without chafing it excessively and to make sure there are no rough edges caused by the wire portion of the old halyard chafing against the slot edges. .

|JimsCAL||A couple of additional points. You should use a low stretch line, not standard double braid dacron. A low stretch dacron line (like XLS Extra) is OK for cruisers, but a dyneema or technora core line (like Warpspeed or Ultra-Tech) is a better choice. Yes, you can replace the halyards with the mast up using a light "messenger" line and pulling it through. You can order the new halyard with a "reeving eye" for attaching the messenger if you wish.|

I changed the Halyards on my islander 26 from wire/rope to rope in 2004. Bought standard rope halyards from west marine (discount through friend working there) and they have worked great.
I would check the shieves to insure they will accomdate the rope halyards.

|wchevron||i just had the rigger replace the wire/rope halyards on my '78 30 with all rope. they work much better now.|

Check your masthead sheave. If it has a groove in the center for wire you should change it otherwise the halyard won't last as long.

|rheaton||I recently purchased new halyard line and sheaves for my catalina 30 from catalina direct. Their techincal hotline folks will give you good advice. I also bought a fid set and, after a number of tries, did the splice myself.|

I had that combination and changed to all rope halyards. On Giu and SD's advice, I used Dyneema for reduced stretch and higher strength / lower diameter. As its about the same diameter as the wire it replaced, the blocks do not seem to cause a problem.
There was no problem pulling the new halyard through with the old tail. I used the sleeve off a piece of old rope whipped onto the old tail and the new head. Then pulled it through from the old head end, which had a swagged eye on it.

Halyard Changing wire to rope?
I have a catalina 27 '79. The main halyard and jib halyard are wire attached to rope. I was wondering if anyone knew if i could replace the halyards with all rope ones? Also if I need to keep wire or change to rope can you replace it with out stepping the mast? Thanks in advance.
