|Zanshin||HerbDB - I use a small inverter for my laptop onboard as well and have never had problems, either. But I have read that others have had issues. I did a bit of looking around on Google since the post earlier and have seen mention that problems are more prevalent on the bigger, more power-hungry, notebook chargers. My old notebook is an ACER with a 12V charging system that never had problems, I've now upgraded and see my new Sony notebook uses a 19v charging system; perhaps I'll have issues now as well.|

I had no problems with the cheap inverters with the TV or the computer. I often used the computer while charging with the 1500 watt inverter. It was just the smaller that wouldn't charge and run at the same time. I paid about $50 for the 350 watt and about $150 for the 1500 watt.
We used the computer on the inverters a lot during a 6 month trip. I am writing this on the same HP laptop we took with us. I was concerned about the information I had read that it wouldn't work or that the video would have static or lines in it. This turned out not to be the case with my equipment.

Before we made our trip to the Bahamas last winter, I installed a 1500 watt inverter in the galley. I used properly sized wire based on the run lengths. I tapped into the system just downstream of the shunt that reports to the battery monitor for the positive lead. This allowed the draw to be monitored and accounted for in the battery status indications. I installed an inline 100 amp fuze (recommended in the installation instructions). The neutral lead went to the standard Beneteau negative bus/switch. This system worked well for the coffee maker or microwave (one at a time). The draw on the batteries was huge, but short lived with both devices.
I also had a 350 watt inverter with a standard 12V lighter outlet plug. This would recharge the computer, but only if it was not running at the time. I am not sure why this happened because it would run a 22 inch LCD HD TV and my sons game systems with no problems.

I believe these inverters are stand-alone ones, with an AC outlet in them, rather than one designed to hook into the boat's Shore-power AC system.

I'd have a look at Calder before making a permanent inverter install. There's a lot of baggage to haul when you decide to wire the device permanently to your AC service...what to do about the required voltmeter, for instance, or what to do about the GND / Neutral hookup.
A portable, temporary system replete with battery clips and breakout box is probably your best bet.
Then size won't necessarily matter.
