Nope, we COULD re-comission the USS Missouri and lob 16" shells, THAT would make somebody take notice.. that and the CWIS....

A boat load of explosives (like the one that took out USS Cole) would just require a bit of paint to the sides of the big Mo!

Nothing like showing up in an Iowa Class Battleship to say "you are dead!"

ben1987 I heard a story from another marine who was with a MEU a few years ago about pirates off of somalia, I'm not sure if its true, but still entertaining. Supposedly these pirates were within range of a navy ship and one of the pirates freaked out and fired at the ship with some sort of small arms. The navy gunners requested permission to fire back and the captain let them have at it. So, obviously the pirates were blown away. Having spent time on ships I can only imagine what that would be like, considering that the smallest weapons I ever saw were 50 caliber machine guns. That would seem to be a fairly effective approach.
Also interesting to note, the United States first major foreign crises after the revolution were with north african pirates, one of the primary motivations for the creation of the peacetime navy.

Johnrb Here is a link below to an interview with the captain of a Canadian frigate regarding Somali pirates. H.M.C.S. Calgary received a distress call from a Taiwanese freighter that was being attacked. The Calgary headed towards the attack as did a German ship but the Taiwanese boat managed to outrun the pirates. The two ships sent helicopters to send a message to the pirates who were waiting in the shipping lanes for another target (the pirate boats fled the scene). Too bad they weren't blown out of the water.

The boats were about 60-70 miles offshore. Commander Larkin stated there have been 10 pirate attacks in the past week and a half - one per day on average. I didn't realize it was that bad.

The interview is the last in part 3 at about the 23:30 minute mark.

Boasun The waters off most coasts in Indian Ocean basin are very shark infested.
So when captured, take their boats away from them and make them walk home. This would be a modern day version of walking the plank.
But you need to know those are backing these idiots and getting them the boats and weapons, take them them several miles offshore and let them walk home also. Sort of survival of the fittest. And in the Indian Ocean, Sharks are at the top of the food chain.

Your starting to come around to my way of thinking but I propose a "green" solution.

If you selectively nuke the a few countries in that area, you'd create just enough nuclear winter to offset global warming, stop the rapid melting of the worlds glaciers and ice pack and save the Polar Bear. Thereby solving the worlds problems via the application of high explosives!

I think even Greenpeace could get behind the idea.

blt2ski AH yes, not that I agree with the modern pirate, as I have relatives from the 1700's that were on pirate ships of the day..........For the current one's blow em up!

The ones from the 1700's to 1800's were usually paid for by part of the loot, along with giving some of it to the "king" of the country that hired them.

eMKay Good, go get 'em. I'm a firm supporter of the "bait and shoot" way of hunting vermin

nolatom What an excellent idea. Pirates do it because the money outweighs the risk, and also because they are apparently unburdened by any moral hesitation.

So if the risk/reward equation changes, the pirates will go look for someone else to steal from, or move away, or get actual jobs, or whatever....

There's a reason why pirates traditionally are liable to be tried under the law of any nation that captures them (a "stateless crime")--because no nation likes them, and no nation is willing to own up to their being citizens of that nation.

It's a big, big, problem for both merchant shipping and long-distance recreational cruisers.
