Congrats on the new boat. I have bought a similar 28' sabre, 1976, on the cheap and am redoing the entire boat. Bulkheads, sole, stringers, whole nine yards. Perhaps we can share info and fill each other in on suppliers etc for parts, and share methods, pics. If you are interested let me know. I have all winter to work on mine and intend to have it all pieced together for the spring so im moving pretty fast. Tonight after work I replaced the cutlass bearing complete with new 1 5/8 wire reinforced exhaust hose and double clamped for good measure. The old hose I was able to pull out with bare hands, clamps and all. Surprised the old hose didnt sink the boat. After dinner I cut a few bulkheads and have glassed up all kinds of pieces including stringers etc. Ive done this kind of thing before, mostly with power boats but the methods are all the same so I have a good idea where im going. Hope your project is coming well. Keep us all posted on your project, my pics will come soon.

There comes a time when you can stop sinking money into a boat? I'm on something like number 12 currently (looking at potentially #13 this Saturday) and I haven't come across a boat like that yet. ;-)

Free is good. That justifies a lot of time, effort and funds provided it is a sound foundation to build from. I walked away from a free Cheroy Lee Frisco Flyer (26' wood boat) once that I figured would eat me, my time and my available funds alive. To pay a yard to do what that boat needed (five years ago) would have cost $45 to 50K I guessed. If I'd done it myself (ha) I'd just about be getting done now after having not had a vacation day in those five years that wasn't working at that. Some guys love that stuff (God bless 'em) and would rather build/futz than sail. Not me.

82sabre everything is good, I think being a couple miles inland from the port on a canal has really been a saving grace for this boat. There is just a coat of algae on the hull, and a small amount of barnacles towards the bow, there is also no corrosion on the rudder shaft and the driveshaft and prop all seem to be in good shape. We've been getting a lotta rain and have been able to find some leaks, one of the windows leaks pretty good, and we also have another mystery leak that we gotta find. I'm going to Barbados for a week and the real work will most likely begin when I get back.

82sabre Cleaned off the running gear, left the dock under her own power today for the first time in 5+ years!! Next up is taking her to the ocean to scrape her clean.

82sabre Sanctuary , thanks a lot man. We have just gone through the whole interior, we pulled out all of the drawers, removed everything in the boat that was ruined, we literally pulled garbage bags of stuff out, worth thousands between nav equipment gps etc all ruined from being wet. A picture of your setup to your engine would be great. Our first plan of attack is going to be the bulkheads for sure. We have not decided whether to pull the whole bulkhead or remove the rotted sections and replace with marine ply and glass heavily. The good news is the volvo penta was replaced with a yanmar in the last 8 years and only has a few hours on it from the one cruise that the boat actually made. It is going to be a PITA to get to that engine though because like you said it is a pretty lousy setup. Everything else is in relatively good shape it is just going to take a lot of elbow grease.
There is a place here in town called sailorman that is all used and warehouse priced supplies, and one of us is getting a job at west marine...employee discount as far as the boat being rock solid, that is totally true there is not a single soft spot or spider crack on the deck and it has been neglected for at least 5 years. I also feel that we have a good support system as we have a lot of close friends that are avid sailors and love doing this type of thing. I guess that's one of the perks of living in Fort Lauderdale where it's summer all year and there is someone around every corner with a lot of know how and connections.

as a sabre owner (sis has one too), the boats are built rock solid.
you have some projects ahead (some 'spensive ones too), but when done, you'll know that boat's systems, inside and out.
engine?..did you address that already? first thing i would do. is reconfigure your companionway steps for engine access. iirc, sabres of that era have a less than ideal set-up. on my '90 30, the whole shebang pulls out. drawers, trash box and tool would eliminate the cross member that will deny decent access.
i'll look and see if i have a pic of the set-up...if you'd like to see.
have you developed your plan of attack..structural, bottom, systems..etc. it will help prioritize your projects (1000's of em, just wait and see) and budget accordingly..lots of great deals on stuff out there, you just have to know where to look. people here are pretty good about helping others through projects w/ timely and $ advice.
