This is what I ordered from BoatUS. Two decals for about $97. Not too hard to install yourself as long as its not too windy.

hellosailor Decal: Short for "Decalomania", a trademarked and patented WATER-SLIDE transfer system. Decals are the really thin "papers" that you place in water and then stick on model airplanes and the like. They're also used for tamper-proof stickers, because they are easily damaged.

On a boat, you wants VINYL SIGNAGE, aka vinyl graphics, aka "stickers", not decals. If you web search "Vinyl boat names/signs" you'll find hundreds of shops offering them including almost every chandlery.

And your local yellow pages will turn up more.

A premium exterior/marine grade vinyl, from 3M or Gerber or a few other brand names, will have a 5-7 year warranty. Cheap stuff from cheap shops is often semi-transparent and doesn't weather well, so don't skimp on the vinyl itself.

I detest having any remark made by yours truly, considered witty...besides I couldn't get a search result on my username and the word "witty" to come up with any results....

idealflaw Also, I'd like to add that this web forum wouldn't exist if nautical and sailing knowledge came to us in the form of 'common sense'.

No sign maker advertises boat naming/lettering as services they provide in their online interfaces. Search results on google and sailnet yield surprisingly little.
I found the option of searching and ultimately inquiring here made a lot more sense than making an expensive regrettable mistake.

sailingdog Idealflaw-

The Google search for "boat lettering" or "boat name lettering" turned up lots of valid results. As did one for "boat name decals". A search for "marine decals" tends to focus on the USMC rather than boat related stuff. Obviously, you're using a different version of Google than the rest of us.

BTW, if you go to a sign shop, make sure you tell them what you're going to be using the vinyl lettering for, since some types of vinyl sign lettering is less well suited to exterior marine use than others.

artbyjody I use Google to search sailnet. keywords always start with sailnet, then whatever I am looking for. Find the most relevant one and then click on the find similar results from this site..

using your keywords:

Yielded a fairly decent result....

idealflaw my google and sailnet search strings have included "boat name decals" "marine decals" marine lettering, etc.
search results are minimal, unrelated with the exception of 2 websites.

sailnet search results are not much better. i know we're all quick to assume newbies just jump in and ask these questions without looking, but that's not always the case. the only relevant sailnet search result I received referenced (without linking) a sailnet-owned decal service -- i eventually found the link to be dead....

Thanks for the sign maker recommendation, I'll do that!
hopefully someone searching in the future will find this thread helpful or relevant

Joel73 The SN search engine is not that great and you have to dig a little. Here is the thread that Camaraderie was refering too:

Nevermind the "lack-o-respect"... welcome to sailnet idealflaw.
