Rockter Tie it well to the dock and run the motor at the same revs he did and watch it carefully.
If it's going to overheat, you should see it promptly.

SEMIJim N.B.: I have no experience with this engine, this type of "dual loop" coolant system, or marine engines, in general.

If what I think of as the "inner loop" of this coolant system is alike a regular automotive engine coolant system, that sounds like it'll probably do it.

Only thing you could do more, I would think, is an acid flush of the water jackets in the engine. (Which I'd do in your place eventually, anyway, given what you've told us.)

I get the impression the mechanic's "worst he's ever seen" evaluation was before the repair? He seems to think it's okay now?

If you're not comfortable having the captain give it another go, on that, ask the yard as to the advisability of an acid flush for the engine, I guess. That's about all that's left, to the best of my limited knowledge.

Midlifesailor;

I had a similiar problem with my Universal M25 when I moved my new boat from Oceanside to Long Beach, Ca. This should have been a 9 hour trip and I was by myself. Forty-five minutes out of port I checked my temp and I was overheating. I found that if I powered down I could keep the temp in a acceptable range. Needless to say a 9 hour trip took 14 hours. Turns out that the heat exchanger was toast and the intake hose was fouled. After installing a new one I have not had any problems and that was over a year ago. I still pay careful attention to the temp, check the coolant level, the raw water strainer, hoses and replaced the raw water impeller at the beginning of this season. And the next time I buy a boat I will also pay for a mechanical survey not just a rig and marine survey. My bad. I guess my advice would be to fix it. Enjoy your boat. Soon something else will break or an upgrade and you will forget all about this incident.

Yeah, I that's been weighing on me lately.

We need to get the boat moved from the top of the Chesapeake to lower mid bay. Haver deGrace to Deltaville. I don't have access to charts right now but about 160 miles I think.

The engine is a Universal, M30 or M35. I don't have access to the boat paperwork until I get home.

Help! Advice needed.

Well our new to us boat is not going to be in its new slip today as planned. I had to travel for work this week so I opted to hire a Captain to deliver the boat while I was 1/2 way across the country. Of course, it turns out he only got a short ways before the engine began overheating so he turned back and called me. There was no indication of this on the survey and the one thing I did thought I did do right, was run the engine pretty hard during the sea trial. The plan was to take vacation the week of the 4th to get to know our new boat and that's all in shambles.

Anyway after several hours of diagnosis and work, it turns out the coolant (some sort of biodegradeable version) used has not been changed in some time, and according to the Captain who agreed to watch over the mechanics for me, it had sludged up the thermostat pretty good. The yard replaced the theromstat and removed and flushed the heat exchanger and now says the engine was showing around 170 degrees running hard. I asked the mechanic if he had seen this type of thing before, and he said it was not unheard of. Asked to rate the severity of the problem, I got the impression it was more towards the worst he's seen end of the spectrum, than the no big deal end, but he seemed to think the situation was resolved. I'm still trying to get a few more details out of him, and he is supposed to get back to me tomorrow.

My concern is could the engine itself be sludged up as well, and what if anything to do about it?

It seemed the yard really wants to be done with me but that might have been because they knew I was trying to get the boat moved. Now the earliest the Captain can move it is next Monday. So I have some time, and I want to be confident that the engine is not a problem waiting to happen when I do move the boat. What should I do?
