while your story had nothing to do with sailing (meaning with cloth sails), I enjoyed it. Good on you for rebuilding a 6-cylinder (right?) engine at age 13, and building a boat from scratch. The lessons you learn doing both will last a lifetime...

That was quite and accomplishment. I very much appreciate you taking the time to share it with us.
This was another reminder as to why I keep hanging around Sailnet.

|Sn0wman||Great story, Reminds me of my 16 foot boat sitting in my parents barn. 23 years ago my dad presented me with a book of plans. He was amazing with his hands, he could make or fix anything. Anyway, we spent a year and half every possible evening and weekend building this boat together. As you said, quality father son time. Teaching me how all the different tools worked, how to have patience, and pace yourself. Now years later, it hasn't seen water in a few years and desperately needs some attention. I hope my summer slows down soon so that I and my 5 year old daughter can work on it together. My dad left me one last father son project which I hope to finish someday, we were working on the last two frames of a beautiful 16 foot centerboard sailboat when he passed away. Thanks for reminding me of all the time in the shop.|

|chucklesR||Well spoken, well said. Keep being a sailor, but I was thought 'old farts' were just dust plumes.|

Great story! I bet you could get it published!
A neighbor gave me an old Scott-Atwater outboard to fix when I was a kid. I took it all apart, made new gaskets for this and that, then put it all back together. It never did run again, but perhaps that had something to do with the extra parts I had left over. Glad you were more successful!

That was a piece of literary art....just as good as any closing story in any fishing rag I read.
You just might have missed your calling....on second thought no ...you did not...your a Sailor...
Thanks for sharing that

Great story Gary, Thanks for sharing it. The weather forcast here in the Annapolis area is so bad I left the boat at the dock today.
