It may be ancient technology, but high-strength, high-quality parts never go out of vogue, an never come cheaply. The aircraft engines are made to standards more akin to something on the NASCAR circuit.

brak I know that 13 years ago PO paid $15K for repower with 4 cylinder yanmar (4JH2E). I had the receipt somewhere. Probably almost double that by now.

As bad as 7 to 8 thousand sounds, I'm looking at $25,000.00+ for an overhaul (not new) on my Lycoming and it is ANCIENT technology.

Add another 10 to 15 thousand for new

blt2ski I'm not sure if one could find a new diesel for less than 4-5G's no matter what it went into, except for some of the smaller .5L single cylinders for lawnmowers. But even then. I had to buy a 16HP twin cyl for one of my mowers, and it was $2200 installed! A boat motor is way more complex that that setup!

jbondy I repowered with a 3YM two years ago (from a 3GM) and find the $7.5k and $5k (without transmission) numbers about right. It takes about 60 to 70 hours of labor to install. No matter what anyone says, nothing ever "drops right in".

deniseO30 Actually my universal 5416 is kubota based too. I still don't know why we can't get short and long blocks like they do in the auto engine biz. these small diesels are so small! but like diamonds they seem to priced almost as high!

Rockter Kubota is a good unit. Beta Marine use them also.

Gary1 Before you take the leap for a Yanmar, look into Phasor engines. They are based on Kubota engines, and will probably run forever.

For what it's worth, we have a Phasor 8KW generator and it has not caused us a lick of trouble in nearly five years since we installed it new to replace the old Mase POS.
