|sailingdog||I am against using stainless in either anchor chains, swivels or anchors. The crevice corrosion can be a serious problem and doesn't always give the same warning signs that galvanized gear will give.|

|camaraderie||Occasional anchoring will not be a problem...when your anchor is down every day in cruising mode is when crevice corrosion will be a problem.|

I can pipe in on the stainless chain also. When i got the Bayfield it had anchor on board but no chain. I used a peice of stainless chain that had been around our shop for along time on it. It was 5/16'' and about 13-16' long. Worked out great. I anchored out every weekend with it in thick mud and the chain never showed any issues.
You can see it piled up in the front of the locker.

The stainless chain will likely not be under the water much (unless used on a mooring of course)
Anybody with a SS anchor chain care to comment on issues experienced?

But the chain is still in good shape and not all rusty.

|SVDistantStar||I did say that it has been replaced and will be replaced by better chain very soon.|

Oh Gawd...that is an advertisment for Home Depot Chain?
Here's my Acco BBB after 2 years and a hurricane.
Yeah it would have been nice if the anchors and mooring blocks held!

Well ill put my 2cents in on this. Ive been useing Home Depot chain on my boat since i got it. Ive still got the 30' of 3/8 high test chain that i bought when i got the boat. I got the zinc plated stuff, not galvanized since they only have high test in zinc plated. Yes it is rusty now, but its pretty much still there. Ive since retired that chunk and bought some new chain last week when i bought new anchors.
On that note, i will be replacing this chain soon with some better high quality chain since my boat is riding 100% of the time on the anchors. My 2cents worth is if your just using your anchor for weekend trips, go with it, if you boat is on this chain all the time, get good stuff.
This shows how rusty that 2 year old peice of chain is.
