|Sailormann||Why don't you just take a cold shower and run out into your back yard and beat yourself with a stick for a while ? You may well survive the Cape Hatteras trip, but from my perspective...if I was an experienced off-shore skipper and was looking for crew to help me sail a boat through bad seas in the middle of winter, I would start with the most experienced crew I could find, so that when I lost consciousness from hypothermia there would be someone on board with the seamanship and navigational skills to take over and maybe give me a chance of survival. After I had asked all of my qualified acquaintances, and received responses ranging from incredulous through dismissive to downright hostile, I would start approaching people who had spent some time sailing on lakes...|

Paulk...good post. That is why I would like to lock them...leave them readable but make new posters start a new thread. Just one opinion. Jeff has said he will look at the issue but things will probably stay as they are as locking down posts tends to reduce traffic/page views which is how an ad supported site makes money. If everyone would just use a little common sense and
1. Look at the date of the last post before making one.
2. Starting a new thread for current questions.
....life would be easier for those of us who kinda live here! There have we hi-jacked this thread enough now???!!!

The point is, if you have new questions, start a new thread. Hijacking an old one hides the new, pertinent question beneath (here for example) six pages of talk about the stupidity of heading out totally unprepared into a spot that's dangerous enough in the summer, let alone the wintertime. A new question about which foul weather gear might be the best NOW is not helped by hiding it under the heading "Cape Hatteras in February", where such gear might have been discussed, but is now dated. If the original poster wants to come back two years later and tell us how he did, and REFERENCE the previous thread, great. If you have questions about Cape Hatteras in February, or any other topic, look in the archives or do a site search for it. Ending up with multi-page threads that are too long for anyone to wade through, and which go off on tangents serves no purpose. Look for example at the thread about the US submarine hitting a Japanese tanker in the Straights of Hormuz. Posters at the tail end of that thread apparently read the heading and went to the end and posted w/o reading the thread or following through with the links mentioned by earlier posters. If they had done their homework, they wouldn't be quoting "rules of the road" and berating the sub skipper for not looking before surfacing. The submarine was submerged with no apparent intention of surfacing when the tanker passed over it. Anyone who has tried to transfer passengers under way knows that when two vessels come together, great care needs to be taken as the two hulls approach one another and the Bernoulli effect (lessening of pressure when fluids pass over curved surfaces) tends to pull the two together. This seems to be what happened - with the submarine being pulled up, into contact with the surface ship. All this is in the thread, but ignored, because the thread has gotten too long. New posters continue the misinformation stream. Shorter threads help surfers to read more carefully, because they don't get bored with the minutiae, and may hopefully lead posters them to focus on more pertinent information. Reading the original posting date avoids "helping" someone who has already left and possibly already returned, sold his boat and bought an RV. Please don't clog the system by dredging up old issues and treating them like they were new.

Keeping threads free can save a life. Don't lock them up.

Does that mean that this "dead" thread is fittest, since it seems to have survived Cape Hatteras? Now that's seamanship. And it's almost Feb again.

Maybe its a dead post, however, I laughed my *SS off guys....thanks....I loved it. There's probably a reason the author never wrote back....

|sailingdog||It actually isn't just one more flag to set...if you have it as a user option...it is a flag set for each person... if it is set as a universal variable, it is a single flag to be set. Big difference when it comes to the processing and presentation of the information.|
