I was interested in reading several old articles, so I tried the "FREE 14-day trial subscription". Guess what? To get it you have to buy a 6 month subscription to the paper magazine.
OK, I'll bite. So I sign up and pay. Now I go back to the website to look at those old articles, but I still can't get them. So I check with customer support. It turns out that (a) you must purchase the subscription to the paper magazines to get the the on-line subscription, and, (b) the only thing you can read with your on-line subscription is the current and immediate previous issue of the magazine -- exactly what you have in the paper magazines you purchased.
To me it felt like bait-and-switch. This alone diminished my opinion of their credibility.
I do recommend their book "Practical Sailor Guide to Sailing Gear". It summarizes a couple hundred gear review articles. At Amazon sellers have it new for $10 and used for $6.
Their boat reviews are really good and are all reprinted in their "Practical Boat Buying" books. I bought a used older edition and got reviews of the boats I was interested in. This was a lot cheaper than spending $20 for each review.
They do a pretty good job with their magazine, but I don't buy enough new gear to justify the price. In fact, in four issues the only article I can remember off-hand was the one on the FLIR night vision for $10 grand or something ridiculous, and they even used the photo out of the FLIR advertisements!
When my 6 month subscription ends it won't be renewed. On the other hand, I just bought a three year subscription to GOB, and even picked up their CDs of old issues. Maybe some day I'll have time to read them.

One reason it probably doesn't happen here in the US... is that the geographic area covered is a bit larger... the UK is about the one-and-a-half times the size of New England or so...isn't it... 243,820 kmē vs 181,440 kmē.

I just checked on my subscription cost for Practical Boat Owner and it is pricey here as well. $80/year. I don't think I paid that much when I got it and I got the three year subscription...it's discounted to $211 for a three year currently but you know how that goes...you have to almost lapse before the real deals come out, I've got another year to go. Not sure what exchange rate is being used either.
In any event, the current issue of PBO showed up today and while I have not even cracked it open yet, here are the articles highlighted on the cover:
Boats to beat the credit crunch: 2 new trailer-sailers plus Westerly cruisers from just L7,500.
Laying up essentials: Expert advise for winter ashore and afloat.
How to make your own sprayhood.
Biscay crossing guide
Biodiesel: Can you use it in YOUR boat engine?

New Series/Improve your skills: How heel affects your steering.
That's just on the cover...inside it seems there's an article on how you can assist your rescuers in a helicopter rescue, an article on making a jig for gluing wooden rub strips...you get the idea.
So, as Val said, I can take some time in reading it as there is plenty of meat there. Not all the articles are as in depth as one might like but they're all worlds ahead of the usual Sail level. Another advantage is that I get to read about boats that are strangers to us on this side of the pond. And I spend way too much time converting pounds to dollars hoping that some gizmo from Yurrup is going to be a real deal versus what I can find here.
I can't say if it's worth $80/year but it's sure worth more than four $20 subscriptions to some of the stuff out there. Unless you're into ads a boat reviews that review nothing.

Yes, riding a bloated Gold Wing after one's prostate exam to one's docked Hunter to drink Lamb's Navy and RC cola under a bird-crap laden bimini is the general impression I've got of how their readers spend their summers.
I don't care much how people choose to have their fun, but to my mind, the real "cruising lifestyle" doesn't get you that close to the sort of newsstands where Lats and Atts is sold...or close to any newsstand on a regular basis!
It's like an RV owner claiming to be a trucker, or someone who has played laser tag a few times claiming to be an assassin. I also find the "aren't we naughty rebels?" thing a little tiresome with all the covers of tautly fit bikini babes draped over suspiciously polished pulpits, most of whom look the age of the daughters or even the granddaughters of the average L&A reader. The whole effect is a touch unsavoury...and I like tautly fit bikini babes...if they have callouses from hauling on sheets and the kind of torso you get hoisting a big main!

Personally, I've not renewed any magazines subscriptions because I've got no money since we're in a depression and because I can find anything I need on the internet. I'm a member of The Seven Seas Cruising Association - Home, however, which includes a free on-line subscription to Ocean Navigator.
BTW, I agree with the assessment of Cruising World and Sail magazines. I sometimes feel like I'm the only hobo with a little boat on a very large ocean!! Fortunately, I "frankly don't give a damn!" (Gone with the Wind?)...

Well, it was expensive in Amsterdam's airport, although the steady parade of attractive six-foot-tall Dutch blondes and the ability to buy a breakfast Heineken cushioned the blow somewhat.
I got my PS and my Ocean Navigator late last week. They are complimentary to each other, and both are pretty no-nonsense. GOB can get a little mushy for me, and I really dislike Latitudes and Attitudes for some reason...probably because being born in the '60s (ok, the early '60s), I just break out in hives at the idea of Jimmy Buffett on permanent rotation, debating the merits of mojitos versus D'n'Ss and being drunk at anchor on a shoal draft Catalina in the Bahamas with frisky seniors. I can get my fill of that at my own club here in the frozen North.
