Anderson ST Winches and Regatta Braid

Our primary winches are Anderson ST40ís. We installed Regatta Braid sheets on our genoa, which jammed up in the Anderson self-tailer mechanism. I called Scandvik and learned that Andersens donít work well with that rope. The self-tailer mechanism consists of a pulley that is sprung to pinch/grip the line as it passes thru with a stripper that peels the line out. Regatta Braid is so soft that it doesn't peel out of the sprung pulley. Instead, it bunches up and jams. One winch was so badly jammed that the black plastic disc that provides the tension was damaged. I ordered a replacement and, for some reason, that didnít completely fix the problem Ė the mechanism is still definitely looser than it was (and also looser than the other ST40). When I looked at the ST40s at the show, I noticed two differences between them and mine. First, the stripper in the new tailer is definitely thicker. Mine is a thin piece of metal with some plastic molded over the tip. The new one is much thiscker and more robust looking. My first question was whether this new stripper allows Regatta Braid to be used with the new model. The new model also no longer uses a plastic disc as the spring. I've asked whether the older unit can be refitted with the newer parts. If so, Iíd be interested in doing that to my ST40s.

They were unable to answer at the show. If anyone is interested in hearing the answers, I'll post them when I get them.
