FarCry Sab you might also cosider that some policies allow you to stay in the "box" if you agree to have your boat hauled for any named storm in your area.

sab30 Cam....Good to know..I thought maybe it was a generic set of geographical specs..I will compare the quote and look at their individual criteria....Thanks

camaraderie Sab...note that many companies will charge more or less based on the size of the box...other can eliminate the box...for a price!

camaraderie that from an on-line document? If so...can you provide a link? Looks like they've left Grenada out of the box after crossing it into the box after Ivan. Good news!

billyruffn There are also boxes in the Pacific. The following is from the Jackline Polciy offered by IMIS.

1.25 Tropical Storm Zones

The northern tropical storm zone is comprised of the waters and territories located:

• between 012° 40’ and 031° 00’ North latitude and between 030° 00’ and 100° 00’ West longitude,

• between 008° 00’ and 026° 30’ North latitude and between 090° 00’ and 180° 00’ West longitude and

• between 008° 00’ and 045° 00’ North latitude and between 060° 00’ and 180° 00’ East longitude.

southern tropical storm zone is comprised of the waters and territories located:

• between 008° 00’ and 026° 30’ South latitude and between 090° 00’ and 180° 00’ East longitude,

• between 008° 00’ and 026° 30’ South latitude and between 120° 00’ and 180° 00’ West longitude and

• between 008° 00’ and 045° 00’ South latitude and between 030° 00’ and 090° 00’ East longitude.

camaraderie Each company sets their own "box" latitudes and longitudes. There is NO single box.
Example...Blue Water Insurance sets theirs at:
A fundamental concept if safe cruising is to stay out of the hurricane zone during the hurricane season (between 12 degrees 40 minutes N LAT to 23 degrees 30 minutes N LAT while between 55 degrees W LON and 85 degrees W LON July 1 to Nov 1.

This box extends from St. Vincent to Nicaragua in the the tropic of cancer in the north (bisecting he Bahamas, the Florida strait and just north of the Yucatan) and is bounded on the east by exluding all of the Caribe Islands by about 50 miles and on the west excluding all of the western caribe.

This is an attractively SMALL box as Grenada is not excluded nor is Florida or the Bahamas. Many policies will exclude anything south of the Chesapeake.
DO NOT mistake this explanation as an endorsement for Blue Water Insurance. I do NOT use them or endorse them...just found the information convenient. The test of any insurance company is how they pay when you need them...not where they draw their box.

Hurricane Box

Trying to secure some insurance quotes the question of the "hurricane box" comes up. I understand the time of year and general area that is suspect but Im wondering if there is an actual graphical chart available of whats included/excluded?
