Re: Hughes 38' 1988

i visited one recently and found that there is 6'2 headroom, and lots of room in the settees for sleeping and in the quarter berth. there was too much work to be done on the boat, altho it was complete minus motor. the price was right however, altho i believe it could be gotten cheaper.

i am interested in the H38 because i believe it to be a good ocean boat, that has great upwind capacity and is seakindly. Lynn and Larry Pardee as well as Fatty Goodlander seem to agree. Several other, less well known, people that have them have commented that they are easily handled and handle chop and stable on all points of sail. I have never sailed one, but i see that they are affordable compared to other designs here in eastern canada - mostly ontario.

i expect no difficulty in singlehandling, as that is precisely what i plan to do most of the time. even with crew, i expect to do most of the sailing and work, including most docking. Which one are you looking at? I think i know most of the H38's for sale in
n america. i am not ready to buy yet, maybe in two years. Now im just studying and preparing.

i also dont have enuf posts to PM or email. perhaps we can talk here until we can email.

Re: Hughes 38' 1988

The Hughes 38 should be possible to single-hand but it's rig proportion makes this a little more difficult than a boat that was less dependent on large overlap headsails or similar sized fractional rigger. The traveller in the cockpit should make single handing much easier since you can play the main from the helm which is critical on these boats in gusty going.

I am looking to move up from a Redline 25 to an H38, but am concerned about the ability to solosail the H38; I usually go out now by myself, all on day-sails but would like to extend my range. Have you sailed the H38 single-handed?

Any comments that you could give on the handling of the H38 would be very much appreciated.

Cheers!

That is almost a challenge, but slightly reassuring! I think I would be embarrassed to meet this gentleman, both by his skill level and dexterity.
