I downloaded seaclear II onto my laptop, I have a GPS receiver (unknown maker), I downloaded PL-2302 drivers and G7toWin....nothing is working!
I checked USB on the g7towin configuration pane and am using COM5/4800bps with the seaclear. I am getting an error message that the USB could not get a handle.
Can anyone talk me through this??
Thanks!

WIthout knowing who makes the GPS receiver and what model it is... there is very little that can be done to help you.

One thing that was causing problems for another user with a USB GPS reciever was the software. Try plugging in the USB GPS receiver and then firing up SeaClear II without using any other software. Then set Seaclear II for Com5:

I had the same problem. The solution is NOT to start your GPS's software first. Start the laptop with the USB GPS plugged in, count to sixty or so, and then start Seaclear. It should work. I bought two of the damn USB GPSes before I figured out that the GPS software that indicates your satellite acquisition, lat/lon, etc. prevents Seaclear from using the assigned port.

In other words, let Seaclear provide confirmation that your USB GPS is working.

Hope this helps. It took me a number of tries before this worked, but it's working now, and I'm the odd fellow walking around the park behind my house staring at a laptop and muttering "two point seven knots SSW! Cool!"

I assume you know where to acquire and how to load charts. That's a little awkward as well in Seaclear until you get the hang of it, then it's a great little program with a load of useful features.

DOH, I did however forget to mention(due to my hair pulling frustration) that this GPS unit came with a disc(drivers I assume) that was conviently broken in 1/2.The only info on the disc was GPS receiver V1.0.0.My laptop recognizes new hardware(unknown manufacturer), and prompts for a driver install.I select the "find it on the web option", to no avail.Sorry everyone, I realize this is a critical piece of info that I left out of my question. However I too will be "that guy" walking around my back yard knowing EXACTLY where i am on this earth(within a few feet of course)....thanks all

If you don't have the drivers installed properly, it isn't going to work. It's just that simple. Go to the manufacturer's website and download the drivers, and unpack them and then install them.
