|bobmcgov||Surprise, the WSJ favors indoor work with no heavy lifting. Here's a fun exercise: how long would the people at the top of the list survive without the people at the bottom? Bet the people on the bottom could get by just fine without actuaries or historians. An Economist without a Nurse is just an old man with wet bedsheets. Hey Philosopher -- Got Milk?|

|sailhog||The criteria is all screwed up. Necessary energy component? What the hell? Crawling, stoop, etc.? Noise? Stamina? Confinement? These are not the criteria for the worst jobs in the world. An ugly whore lies on his or her back and goes up and down for a few minutes in a hotel room and gets paid a few bucks. Think I'd rather be a garbage man.|

Sorry Billy but you're not a seaman in context of the terms of profession nor in the demands of the profession. In terms of being seamen, most here are little more than at the dilettante level. Now, before everyone get's all jacked up about that, let me say that it has nothing to do with your seamanship or even your level of experience on boats. What it does have a lot to do with is that you'll never even come close to spending the fifty percent of your life out of sight of land, stuck on a ship with relative strangers, that the professional seaman does. That applies to the navy as well where sea duty is the exception and not the norm. That's why they give a ribbon for sea service.
All the way back in the 1970's it was common knowledge that there is no other industry with a higher dissatisfaction level than the merchant marine. And those are damn good paying jobs, too. Until you're willing to spend 6-10 months a year separated from friends and family don't start comparing sailing your boat to being a professional seaman.
You'll have noticed that I went from being a professional seaman to being a roustabout (well driller). Regular old rocket scientist, I am. More likely is that I'm too bull headed to say it hurts. (g)
