orlowsks This is only my second sailing season. No I haven't found a school locally but I am thinking about going to a weekend class out of town. Thank you very much for the link. Another sailor said my boat was rigged for singlehanded and thats why all the strange parts. So I am just trying to learn as efficiently as possible. Got a lead on a 9ft dinghy, hopefully that will help me learn more this summer. Thanks again.

Giulietta Orlo..have you sailed before? Have you rigged the boat already?

The reason I ask, is if you don't know what they are for, you really need to do some learning..and other guys here can give tips on books and schools for sailing in your area.

Giulietta Yes..that serves the same purpose.

You should have a steel cable, called a stay that attches there, and goes up the mast..the further back ypou attach the stay, the more the mast tilts back providing more rake, better pointing, but less downwind preformance, and also more weatherhelm. The opposite on the front hole.

Then the other one behind, is where you attach the clew of your jib.

If you tension the first one yo point better, but less forgivness, if you tension the second, you move sail draft.

Watch this video, made by a guy I know...he is a cool guy, he has an accent, but he is cool.

Giulietta ok.. better do that..

orlowsks This is mounted right to the bow. The holes are inline with the bow and stern. The metal bracket seems to wrap over the bow. I will try to get a picture. Three holes inline.

Giulietta Is it something like this but with less holes?

Giulietta The holes are to adjust mast rake. More rake on the top hole, less on the bottom one.

Also in small boats, lower hole for really wind conditions, upper hole for low wind conditions..

Now if you look on the sides...thre is one on each side, right??

mystery holes

On my 1970 cal 21, I have a bracket on the bow that has 3 holes inline. I'm pretty sure that the forestay connects to it but I don't understand why there is three holes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I could take a picture if needed.
