Howzit Cal sailors,
Yes, humpback migration is in full swing this time of year. All types big and small moving along Northshore, O'ahu. I'm assuming they're headed to Lahaina, Maui to relax and play in the calm waters. It's always an exciting sight to see! Our Cal27 does not have a topping lift(although we'd like one)but does have about an 18" length of travel for the boom gooseneck/downhaul. we ran the boom up high on the track and the reefing points ran smooth after adjusting the outhaul some. We rarely reef, but did it in the slip and made some adjustments in the turning basin. Went well! Whale season is another 6 weeks or so. Always room for a couple more.
Aloha ka'kou,

ps: this is the main reefed down on a summer day with big jib up. Notice how high the gooseneck is up...

smackdaddy Wow Leonard - that's beautiful man! How did you main look reefed? And how did the boom ride (do you have a topping lift)? I'm asking because when we reef our main on our Catalina 27 (have only done it 2-3 times) I'm getting a lot of deformation in the sail and a very low boom and wonder what I'm doing wrong.

I've got to get me a storm tri. I really envy you dude!

We went sailing...

Howzit Cal sailors,
The wind has been howling over here, so we decided to head out and see what our Cal27 could handle. Saturdays wind at Dillingham airfield(Mokule'ia) was clocked at 48 knots! By Sunday afternoon it had backed down to 20-30 with gusts . Later found out that winds reached to 35 that day. Anyway,we reefed down the main and ran a storm tri and were rewarded with a great sail. Saw many whales. Only one other sailboat out that day and they were getting paid to do it. A whale watching cat out of Hale'iwa. All in all, it was fun and we learned a couple things about our boat and ourselves. Small craft warnings doesn't mean that we can't go, just be more careful and pay attention to the conditions. Got a couple of pics on the way home.
Aloha ka'kou,
