L124C I'm happy to report that Bruno from ARCO Answered my questions and supplied a diagram and disassembly instructions (via email) for a very old Barient 23 winch. He even thinks he might have replacement parts (when I figure out what I need). He couldn't have responded faster or been more helpful!

Valiente I have used Lewmar pawls and springs on my 36 year old Barlow non-self-tailers (yes, very old school, but they are excellent winches). As for Barient, so for Barlow as far as ARCO is concerned, it seems:

I will repeat here my tip for winch servicing: Go to a dollar store and get a small plastic dishpan or tray, something about a foot square. Real cheapskates can use a big shoebox or a corrugated cardbox box. Scribe a circle the same diameter as the winch base. Put over the winch base before you remove the outer "shell". If pawl springs, bearing or any other parts come loose when you are servicing the winch, the odds are that they will fall into the box/tray and not into the water.

I cut one tray for the biggest winches, and have a couple of taped in "reduction washers" for the smaller ones. Haven't lost a thing in years, and it keeps the coamings grease free.

patrickrea Lewmar also sells pawls and spring kits for Barient winches. Even WM has them on the shelves. On their site look for the Barient Repair Kit #1.

I found them pretty responsive (although not cheap.) I was able to get new springs and pawls for my 30+ year old Barients. Their site indicates that they have been having problems with their forms. Try sending an email to winches@attglobal.net.
