Re: Please....at least use some KY!
Ah, come on West Marine can be handy.
I used the $90 price tag for a replacement pump on my Jabsco manual head to help rationalize spending $225 to replace the whole thing with a better quality Raritan product from Defender.

Economy of scale? Consider this....
I asked the owner of Whale Point how he was able to sell the head seat for $30.00. He laughed, and said: "Because I only make the profit I NEED to make". Turns out that because he is a ACE dealer, he has a relationship with the manufacturer who also manufactures most household toilet seats. However, the "economy of scale" is the same, and he certainly sells fewer seats than WM, from his little store!

|Mc51||I had to replace my forestay. I priced the cable at West Marine. They said $3.49 per foot. When I went to purchase it I found out they didn't have marine grade in stock. That was their price for commercial grade cable. I bought commercial grade from a local hardware store for $.89 per foot instead. I planned to use it until I could order the marine grade. Two years later I'm still using it with no rust showing.|

West system user manual
Just a point of interest.....I paid $.02 for the FREE west system epoxy overview manual at WM? I joked about it at the counter, but that didn't deter the counterman from charging the full $.02. But they are convenient....

West Marine is definitely special in their markup capabilities. It also looks like they outdone themselves this year.
A roll of teflon pipe tape is $2.99 at West Marine, $0.79 at Home Depot. I think in %% this is the highest markup I've seen.
A bottle of 3m Scotchgard wax which sells for $22 at Defender is $35 at WM. Last year the price was the same at Defender and $26 at WM. I think WM desperately needs money if they raise markups this much.

Only 80.00? A bargain at twice the price!

Went to the little marine/hardware store that was selling the seat for $20.00 (see picture). I asked the owner how he was selling it for that price, when everyone else was $60 to $80. He said that due to his Ace affiliation he was able to go directly to the manufacturer. So, the manufacture is the same that manufactures the larger household seats (of course). I told him about this post and the "economy of scale" theory. He smiled and said; "$20 is twice the amount you would pay for the larger house hold seat. That's plenty of mark up to account for economy of scale!" Even if you through in a middle man who makes $10.00 on the deal, that brings the retail cost to $30. What an honest guy, though spelling is apparently not his strength ("origionl"! This is a relatively small store with relatively small volume (I assume) and most of his marine stuff is considerably less expensive than I've seen it elsewhere. Wish he was closer to my boat! Anyway, my point is; face it boat owners, you are getting screwed! It's not going to change unless we revolt in mass But at least realize it, and stop making excuses for greedy retailers like; "obviously, it's due to economy of scale"! Obviously, most of the outrageous mark up is due to greed and people who will pay it!

|anthon||Aah, Good old WM. I came close to buying a fishfinder on WM but decided to look round. Thankfully I did as I saved over $150 with the same model from sailnet|
