Hi Terri,

I have sailed from cumberland sound (north of fernandina beach)to Savannah and it took us about 14 hrs(i''d have to check my log book to be sure...) w/o looking at the chart, I''d guess its about 100nm from JAX to Savannah...thats 20 hrs averaging 5knots. Take a look at your Charts...you''ll see there is a line of lit markers following the coastline. You will also notice a redline with bearings and distance from a "point a" to a "point b". This is a good place to start planning your route. If you do this all in one hop, you will be sailing at night. Honestly, I think it is better to leave in the late afternoon get into open water, set your bearing, sail through the night, and make landfall in the morning....

ps. the other post, for the record, is fine advice too...An instructor should no doubt increase your confort level with open water passages.

Have you considered using an offshore, Coast Guard licensed (or ASA et al) sailing instructor to help you reposition your boat. It would be an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience with well organized, informative pre-departure studies, planning and boat preparations. You should expect to build confidence during the journey and have an added license after you complete your test.
Adding a new license could help lower your insurance premiums, improve your sailing abilities and boost your self confidence.
When its "my turn" to venture offshore for the first time, I plan to do it this way.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that you are right a delivery captain is a bit much for such a short distance, but I do know my limits! Have you made the run from Savannah to Jax or St. Augustine? How long should it take? any other advice?

Hi, I noticed your add here and thought I would reply to try to give some advice if anything. I wouldn''t consider myself a professional capt just yet but I have completed a few offshore passages and am pretty comfortable out there provided the vessle is sound. In my opinion, If I were you, i would be looking for a good crew member to assist, rather than a "delivery capt." If you are interested, I may be able to help. I''ve sailed from ft.peirce to beaufort NC, ecuador to PV. mexico via galapagoes, and most recently, from RI to Ft. lauderdale, via Bermuda. I''ve spent about 40 days in bluewater, and have seen plenty of weather and seas so far. I own and liveaboard a Cheoy lee 30, and work on the water every day.

For this trip I would stay relatively close to the coast, 10 nm or so, as the only real current you find offshore is the N-bound Gulf stream.
You really just want to stay far enough off to avoid shoals and traffic. This will also keep you within hailing range of a good vhf ant.

Well Ive got to go (newyears and all) but whatever you do, i hope you have a grea trip. Feel free to contact me and I will be glad to give more info.

I have a 28 ft Morgan OI curently in Isle of Hope GA. I want to take her offshore from Ossabow Sound to Jax inlet. I have no offshore expeience so I need a captain to guide me. I sailed her all the way from Annapolis to Savannah on my own via the ICW. She is equipped with a Yanmar 12 HP and it simply is not enough power for the tidal currents of GA. I either have to go with the tides or go offshore! Her standing rigging was replaced in Annapolis & she is sound & seaworthy!
