Treksail I do not post long messages because I type with 2 fingers and I have arthritus in 1 of them.I will tell you a story about a guy called Me.Me bought a boat 42 foot steel hulled trawler,faired perfectly.Flybridge ,aftcabin ,this boat was new construction and never seen water.All equipment was brand new,diesels with trans,hyd.windlass,hyd.bowthruster,offshore bulletproof windows,10,000 dollar copper nickel antifoulant sheathing.This equipment was the best money could buy.Me got a great deal 40.000.There was at least 180000 dollars spent.I had to move this boat and it would of cost me4000,however being 2inches over 12feet beam it now cost 7000.Me was just getting started.Hey I could work 8 hours a day on the weekends and get alot done.WRONG 8 hours gets nothing done in the big picture.Me spent about 30,000 dollars and 2.5 years with no time but to either work on a boat or go to work to make more money to go work on a boat.Me was a young man with many friends all willing to help when he bought it and his friends dissappeared when things got going.Could you really blame them,work on a boat or go on a friends boat for the day enjoying the water.Time passed on and Me felt worn down,well I will sell it Me thought to himself.Guess what Me did,he sold it for 37000 dollars.What the!It is only worth what someone is willing to pay.Me was told by a few knowledgeable people what the real expenses would be ,but Me only heard what he wanted to hear,they must be my friends,the others must be envious Me thought.I know this story to be true because I was there the whole time.

Dropping by here occasionally as my time allows, a thread like this one sticks out like a gaping wound. The first post is from a sailor asking for advice on loading a large boat on a trailer. A predator of this board, smells fresh meat in a snare in the form of pictures of the boat the skipper has so unknowingly supplied towards his own demise. The predator pokes at the potential kill with the spear tip “If you’re looking for ways to save some bucks, sell this boat for land fill!" Ignoring the predator, some of the wise elders of the board come forward to offer constructive feedback to the forlorn skipper. But others looking to advance their ranking in the tribe have a different assessment of the snared skipper.

“Have you seen the pics of the interior of this boat? Are you saying that because the keel will be supported everything will be fine? The dynamics of a vessel on a trailer can be pretty severe.”

Now the boat is loaded on the trailer, and the primitive drum beat of the ages has begun. A small skirmish breaks out around the loaded boat while she sits sacrificially on her altar. The tribe is restless, and the drum beat increases in it’s rhythmic pounding beat.

”Where is the Captain someone shouts. He must be punished. He had no right to come here to our land. We have the evidence against him and the unworthiness of his albatross of a boat. We have these pictures of it!!"

The tribe has become ecstatic. They’re anxiously awaiting what ever will happen next. Then the first torch is thrown to the boat. It is the torch of reason.

“It seems to me that when the advice to certain questions are obvious we just keep shooting flares hoping to make contact”

The flames flicker, but the old girl just doesn’t want to give up. Another member of the tribe throws the second torch. It’s the torch of integrity.

“Tracksuit, if you’re feelings are hurt, well that’s what Band-Aids are for, if you want sugar-coating, go to Krispy Crème and pick up a dozen.”

The torch rolls across the cockpit, and falls down through the companionway. Flames can be seen flickering through the port holes. The primal urges of the tribe aren’t satisfied though. Lastly, a third torch is thrown. It’s the torch of brotherhood.

“I think your days of not being taken seriously are definitely approaching a middle.”

The torch finds it’s mark and the old girl becomes covered with flames leaping to the sky, while the dazed eyes of the tribe look on. They begin to dance around the burning wreck as the melee gets into full stride. The ship is quickly consumed, and all that is left is the haggard looks of the tribe members as they try to understand what has just happened.

”Someone most speak words, one shouts.”

A junior elder steps ceremoniously forward to address the Captain.

"We''re sailors here, different by nature to the rest of the planet, and maybe a little off center (just ask any powerboater!).
But I think you have underestimated your costs to a STAGGERING degree.”

The gods have been appeased. Muffled voices and the droning drum beat become silent.The tribe moves on.

Well I''ll tell you Sasha, I did appreciate your effort at some kind of logical assistance as well as some others. But on a forum where there general group puts up with people like that I''d just as soon not bother. Everyone just allows them to go unchecked to the point that valid users coming in leave just as quick. Yes, this is a community. If the group doesn''t have the guts to let them know what they think of that crap then you all deserve them.

Denr It seems to me that when the advice to certain questions are obvious we just keep shooting flares hoping to make contact.I am going to rebuild this boat.Is the hull good?No, Sails good No, Engine No ,rig No ,Anything ,Maybe the winches and the lead is still heavy.The only positive thing is that you may find some undiscovered animal never seen by humans(hopefully friendly) living aboard making you famous.This is the last life ring I`m going to throw.I think I`ll start another thread with"I want your input on rowing across the Atlantic in December with one oar and wonder if I should take a firearm on board,and should I get drunk while doing it any suggestions?"That should get more than 30 responces

It amazes me that threads like this have the legs to carry them nearly 30 posts into the abyss. I’m surprised to read responses by such “nut-ical” experts (read jeff_h) containing minutia on transporting scrap Tupperware. Tracksuit, if you’re feelings are hurt, well that’s what Band-Aids are for, if you want sugar-coating, go to Krispy Crème and pick up a dozen. I’m certain there are several sailors out there that would welcome you aboard their vessels for a day on the water, I too would extend the invitation to you, first send me fifty bucks arrrrrrrh.

Be thankful that you posted this query on Sailnet where unbiased and unfiltered opinions are more plentiful than WMDs in Iraq.

Guys like dman and Silmaril seem to be wise beyond their years, listen to them!

Silmaril I could not agree more."when all amongst you are loosing their heads and you are not loosing yours,you probably do not understand the seriousness of situation." The whole thing comes down to anything can be fixed but should it?

While the ribald comments regarding your boat''s condition may upset you, there is a good bit of truth here. We''re sailors here, different by nature to the rest of the planet, and maybe a little off center (just ask any powerboater!).

But I think you have underestimated your costs to a STAGGERING degree.

You may have done this already, but it is time to sit down with a pad and paper and calculater and get a handle on it. Wiring at $1/foot, batteries at $250 EACH for 4D lead acid. VHF, Charger, switch gear, lights, etc. Hoses, through hulls, seacocks, lifelines. Running rigging will make you swallow hard as well. Small snatch blocks are $125/each! Anchor rodes, chain, shackles. Stove, water pump, tanks. Rebuilding the engine, transmission. Just because it might turn by hand does not mean it will run. Rebuild by yourself may cost a couple of thousand alone. A new one will be over $10,000. The list goes on and on and on...

Your estimate of the salvage worth of the hardware included with the sale may a bit optimistic. Used wiches are worth hundreds, not thousands, winch handels 5 bucks, old anchors maybe 10 bucks. The lump of iron you optimistically call an engine has no value. The mast may be worth a couple of dollars per pound to a salvage operation. Probably the greatest value is the few hundred dollars worth of lead in the keel, less it''s transport cost.

The value of the boat in "Bristol" condition is for one that has had a well documented history of care, maintenance, and shows like a new penny. Not something peiced together by someone who may or may not have the proper skills to do the job.

A major concern I stated was the lack of bulkheads and longitudinals inside the hull. While your brother may be a crack cabinate maker, what does he know about propper tabbing technique? Why is the port side stipped away in the first place? Maybe Sasha had a point regarding a portside hard grounding.

Jeff H pointed out his concerns regarding the keel. In materials alone, you will spend thousands doing a PROPER repair. Not to mention the required skill to do it correctly. That is not something you can trifle with. To hire a professional to to it would cost thousands more.

Trecksail, please don''t misunderstand. If there was some sentimental value to the rebuild project or you were attempting to restore a rare peice of nautical history, knock yourself out. I may be unique in this forum, having taken on a restoration project of my own. I mentioned I have spent tens of thousands of dollars, and I am a VERY capable and knowlegdeable person regarding boats, having spent years working in marinas, having an degree in Oceanographic Engineering and tons of practical experiance. I chose my boat for sentimental reasons, but it also far in far better shape to begin with. It took 6 months of working every weekend and evenings before it was ready to even float, not to mention being seaworthy.

If you are looking for a cheap way to get on the water, buy a sunfish. The Irwin was never a highly regarded boat when it was new. I humbly submitt that you will spend over $30,000 in material alone, not to mention the labor investment, and you will have a boat that will never be worth more than $20,000 due to its history. There are better projects out there.
