QueenElvis I don't know the answer to your question, Nomad. I ended up putting in a rebuilt MD2B that just happened to be on Craigs List at the right time for the right price. The original MD2B is in my garage awaiting inspection by someone with more time and knowledge than I. And wouldn't you know it, this person just came into my life in the form of the mechanic I use for fixing my diesel trucks for my boat hauling business. So perhaps I'll have a running engine for sale pretty soon.

Nomad Mercator 30 Ran into this post and having a md2b also, was curious as to what the problem wound up being?

When a motor has water and overheats its one thing

When a motor has NO WATER from heeling it will get much HOTTER because the temp probe is NOT in water and its a BITCH to get air that HOT

And FWC diesel would do much better in a case like this unless it lost coolant also

Capnblu If your motor ran, and YOU shut it off, why wouldn't you just try to crank it over with the fuel off, what are you hoping to discover by turning it over by hand? I don't think you are going to learn anything by looking under the valve cover, unless it's catastrophic and already happened. So do a wet and dry compression test, and bring us back the full set of #'s, this is how you diagnose a less than catastrophic engine failure. A compression test will not diagnose your cooling issue, and a cooling issue doesn't clang or bang, till it has made a catastrophic failure. I doubt the valve train was rattling, if a part were rattling in your valvetrain, it's going to be shot.

timebandit I guess sailing on its ear with the engine running could have starved the engine of oil pressure but I would not expect it to run for an hour afterwards.

timebandit Can you rotate it backward?

Could be you dropped a valve and the piston is being stopped by a valve.

Pull the valve cover and remove all the rocker arms and see if a valve is stuck down, if all is ok than the problem may be worse than you think.

I still find it hard to believe that a good motor with un-burnt oil, running fine for an hour could self distruct so soon.

Sure nothing is wraped around the prop shaft and the thing is still in gear?

Deisels don't have plugs, so no pulling done! And the engine has a decompression lever for each cylinder to allow it to be hand-cranked.

QueenElvis After trying and failing to hand-crank the engine tonight, it looks like I might have a stuck engine.

Penetrating oil time?

Rebuild time? On a Volvo Penta, with expensive parts - I don't know about that.

Repower? How much does a new motor cost, anyway?
