vinyl lettering vs. name paint

Boatyard had the new name painted on Sept 2001. However, when we put PolyGlow on the hull at the end of March 2005, there was some loss of paint at the edges. Paint was Pettit EasyPoxy one-part.

In hindsight, this was the only part of the yard work that was less than ideal. We''ll probably strip and do matching vinyl name and hailing port in two years.

vinyl lettering vs. name paint

It doesn''t matter whether you use paint or vinyl lettering, the key is preparing the surface. My opinion, if you refinish your transom properly using two part linear polyurethane paint and then apply vinyl lettering or paint it on, it will still be on there when you sell your boat (or when they bury you in it at sea Viking style). This is a good opportunity to try doing two part paints yourself if you''re reluctant.

vinyl lettering vs. name paint

The black computer-cut vinyl lettering on “Southbound” was still perfect after 17 years - 8 years in Northern climes and 9 years in the South.

vinyl lettering vs. name paint

I have been told the vinyl lettering should last 5-7 years. How about name painted?
Are there any other pros and cons?
Thanks
