Storage Question!

Hubby and I are in the process of moving on board and have just finished loading a container with all the possessions we are going to keep long term.

Only issue is since we won't have a land based home, we are having trouble finding a company to insure the contents of the container. Has anyone found a solution for this? Any help is GREATLY appreciated as we lose our house insurance today and so are apparently no longer covered....

Where are you storing the container? If you are storing it on a storage lot, you should be able to insure it with renters insurance.

If you really can't find an insurer, you can take out individual policies on big ticket items. For insurance and art work- Chubb has been good but I have heard that they aren't writing new jewelry policies. Jewelry and small items should be in a safety deposit box anyway.

Personally, I would sell off anything that wasn't replaceable or had sentimental value and take out insurance on the big ticket items only. Many times, you can replace material items for less cost than a policy to cover them.

Our sentimental and other stuff is stored at the home of a land-based friend; they are "renting" us a room in their house so we were able to get renter's insurance to cover those things that aren't with us on the boat. As Mimsy said, the big ticket items like jewelry, cameras, have individual floater policies. We have pictures of everything stored offsite, and have 2 duplicates of all our computer files.
