We own a Pearson 36 Mk II built in 1985 that we have in charter [EDIT] in Southern FLorida and the Bahamas. We made many upgrades to the boat for charter, plus just needed some new stuff after many years of use. Great Boat! Worth refitting if needed. We invested $50k in refit because we love the boat so much. Now she is like new.

The original Pearson 36 was built from 1972-1976. The Pearson 36-2 was built from 1985 - 1991. These are completely different hull designs. The P36 had a skeg hung rudder and drew 6 feet, and the P36-2 had a spade rudder, and a choice of fixed or swing keel.
First year P36-2s were predominantly fixed keel with a 6.5' draft. Most of the swing keel P36-2s (4.2' draft) were built after 1986. A few P36-2s after 1988 were equipped with a wing keel, and had a 4'9" draft.
The Pearson 35 was built from 1968-1982. All of them had a swing keel and draw 3.8' with the board up.
Best to find out which YEAR that the boat was built (it will tell you which model you're dealing with), and then determine the draft. The model year is indicated by the last two digits in the HIN.

All the Pearson 36s I've seen have been fixed keel. The Pearson 35 however is a keel/centerboard with 3'9" draft with the board up and 7'5" with the board down. The 35 sails and balances well and is a very sturdy boat. I've had mine in several gales and it does well. The only difference I've seen between the 36 and the 35 is the 36 has a pilot berth along the engine area and it's about 2,000lbs heaver. The 35 is listed as a coastal boat but I would't be afraid to take it anywhere.

Others will know better than I, but I believe the general rule is that while less is best, a max draft of 5 feet is not too restrictive.
btw other specs:
SA 665 sq ft
Whatever you do be sure to view the boat in question first hand before committing to anything, and arrange for a proper survey before proceeding further.
For an owner to have so little knowledge of 'his own' boat is rather frightening.

|bouymon||thanks, its a william shaw pearson 36. that's all i know at this point. also, what would you recommend as the maximum draft for exploring the bahamas and keys.|

Pearson 36 Deep keel is 6'6"; shoal draft keel/centerboard is 4'2" board up, 8'3" board down. Board up in the Bahamas would be fine, I'd expect.
Sure hope the present owner knows which model this is!!

what is draft of 1985 pearson 36
looking at buying a 1985 pearson 36. owner doesn't know and can't find on line. what is draft and what is the maximum draft for exploring the bahamas?
