The company I work for in the BVI's keep kayaks strapped to the lifelines+stanchions just about half way up between the shrouds and the bow pulpit (50 foot beneteaus). paulK has a good point, it's not great for rough weather. However I have made a few trips across the anegeda passage (BVI-St.Martin) with the kayaks like that and through some squalls..they were still there in the morning.
Here in Long Island Sound I've seen boats keep them outside the lifelines to save space...I would never sail in any moderate winds like this, but for careful cruising they're nice I guess. Garhauer makes a rack for them that bolt onto the bottom of the stanchion...http://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=58

We regularly cruise with kayaks on board. They fit nicely on the quarterdeck, flanking the mainmast. In this position, they are not in the way both visually and when adjusting/tuning the rig.

Not every day is good weather for paddling. Where are you going to put them when you have green water coming over the bow? While sliding them inside the shrouds may work most of the time, you may want to have a setup for strapping them down to the cabintop, just to be sure.

Kayaks on Board...?
I''ve seen it done before. A lot of cruiser like to bring along their kayaks when cruising the North Channel. I think they were placed just inside or maybe just outside of the shrouds laying on edge, and than lashed to the shrouds. Don''t know if that presents a problem when tacking the genny over. I could imagine that the sail or the sheets might get hung up on them.

Kayaks on Board...?
Anyone out there with experience carrying seakayaks on a sailing cruise. We have a 33'' Morgan and I hope to accomodate a 16''& 13.5'' kayaks on our excursions. I''m thinking on deck laying from the cockpit, along both sides of the mast, up toward the bow. Creating kind of a ''V'' shape.
Short of selling them and buying two folding kayaks, any advise?
