PamlicoToday My boat is even smaller, a Dufour 30 Arpege, but I also am considering an arch, though nothing as big and fancy as the photos on YachtWorld. That looks like a lot of weight aloft. I am considering making my own of either bamboo or carbon fiber, which I would use for a small radar and wind generator and maybe a tiny solar panel. Even so, that still seems like a lot of weight and I worry about how the boat might handle in a sea? Any ideas on that or on the building materials?

niftynickers Tom,
Looking closely at the stern photo on the Yachtworld 37 I see a whole lot more than simply a stern arch. The are a monitor windvane, dinghy davits, and a Bruce anchor hanging back there as well as the arch.I think that the angle at which the foto was taken was not the most flattering either.

lshick Be aware that anything that sticks up above the panels in the immediate vicinity will cast a shadow on the panel half the time (statistically). Any shadow, however small, will effectively shut down the panel.

One issue we have is that our radar is mounted on a custom pole in the starboard aft corner of the vessel. That pole is bolted to the teak cap rail and also clamped to the stern rail corner. I'm sure the designer of the arch can work around that or even move the radar dome unto the arch.

We also want to preserve the port side stern archor pipe and stern anchor roller. I would think that the forward arch legs could fit in front of that anchor pipe and that the aft arch legs could be bolted to the transom because there is not a canoe end on the 31.

We'd like to have any comments and of course photos would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Here is a pix of a 37 with an arch:

Check out the pix from the rear, yuk!

You will also need to work around the problem of where the front legs
are mounted, especially on the SB side, you need to work around the
propane locker, fill ports, electrical hookup, genoa sheet setup, etc.

Maybe you could piggy back off the rear rail, much like a Bimini frame would be handled.
