bloodhunter You should check out eBay for switch panels before you buy, I've gotten some good deals on stuff for my boat there. Unfortunately they didn't have any switch panels when I rewired my boat . I too wentr with BlueSeas (two 12v and one 110v). As has been pointed out twas pricey but worth it.

groundhog I looked at the various stock panels out there and didn't really care for any of them too much. I built my own from a thin piece of plywood covered in a nice sapele wood venere. Each switch position has a fuse, switch, and plastic nameplate.

Got the nameplates custom off ebay for like $2 each.

I also recall seeing a recent article in Sail or Sailing? magazine where the guy had his own metal panel fabricated. This looked just like the black/white stock panels out there, only better.

mitiempo The radio should stay on if the dock power is out as it's dc and the dock power is ac. They shoud be totally separate systems on the boat with only the green wire fron the ac panel connecting to the engine's ground point.

QuickMick more on the kludge... so the fact that the 'cabin' switch isnt wired, yet the dc wired radio and the 120 cabin outlets work....combined with the fact that Dock 4 dropped shore power last night...outlets fail, yet oddly monday night football was still on the radio another indication of the hack/kludge operation? egad, its always an adventure....

QuickMick hmmm... kludge job? not familiar with the term...yet fubar/snafu seem to pop into my head as i read that... on the right track with that? lol

yes, it is a total debacle in there... might be worth some dough, as i have discovered medusas hair in my panel cabinet....

i do have the switches from a catalina 27 and a hunter 26, but given the amount of corrosion, i doubt the time/trouble/risk in rippin out the old and redoing the switches/fuses would be worth it.... and it needs to look cool too...not some kludge frankenstein jobbie... lol

tommays mick its hard to say other than i have to assume your boat is hacked up like my last two were some pictures of what you have would help

You have to realize on a boat like the CAL 29 it came from the factory with a 6 switch panel that pretty much got the job done

You can buy the 8 switch boxes for 150 dollars X 2 and add a battery setup and a 250' roll of wire and new battery cables and the other bits from DEALZ for less than sspent your really nice panel and have a clean wiring job that will pass a survey

No worry, Quinn. That's the sign of a kludge job, no sailboat power panel ever had an "Ignition" switch on it.
Worry about whatever else he kludged, because anyone using balsa wood for a switch panel was taking shortcuts.
BS can be a bit pricey but they are top quality. You can pick up a couple of six-switch old fashioned "Sea Dog" (and many other brands) panels that use six toggle switches, six little red lights, and six glass cartridge fuses for probably $20-25 per panel and while they aren't BS breaker panels...there's a lot of boats built and expanded with them over the years.

All depends on your budget and aesthetics, and what can be made to fit in the boat. More important to first chase down all the wiring runs, and see what other clever ideas the PO had.

afraid of that

thats what i was afraid of.... *sigh* more 'from scratch' = more 'cha-ching'. lol. cest la vie... luckily ive got an electrical engineer as a client and a buddy who specs. in DC12 for Peterbuilt on their trucks.... they should hopefully be valuable resources....if plied with a little lager or other fermented beverage and the promise of days under sail.....

I think you need to start from scratch - draw up a wiring diagram -what you have and what you want/need. Everything needs to be fused correctly, the right diameter wires and some things need to be regulated.

Another plus is that if you do this, you will understand your system and troubleshooting will be easier.

QuickMick also... the inverter is good, ive got the heavy duty guest bat. selector... if im redoing the other stuff is there a compelling reason to address the working parts i now have?
